Profile bio

About Rebecca Porter

When I was young, I wanted to be a novelist. I loved crafting worlds and experiencing those moments when I would finally find the just-right words for the ideas bouncing around in my head. Yes, I was going to be a storyteller, a starving artist subsisting on words. Because not only did I love writing, I thought it was the only thing I could do well. But my final summer before college, I had a very simple thought: "I really like animals." That thought turned into, "I actually like biology," which turned into, "I might be good at science." A terrifying thought, given my hatred for math and profound fear of STEM, but an exciting one. And so, my very first semester at college, I enrolled in classes in English, Latin, Theater... and Chemistry. This was followed by more Chemistry as well as Biology, Zoology, Botany, Microbiology, and three summers of research internships before finally graduating with a degree in Biology. Oh, and a degree in English, too. Because I am still a storyteller, and as much as I love telling stories about fictional worlds, I love telling stories about this world, too: about how beautiful and complex our planet is, how much trouble it's in, and how we can effect positive change.
