Rapti Siriwardane-De Zoysa, Ph.D. Email and Phone Number
I'm an environmental anthropologist, writer, and lecturer based at the University of Bonn (BCDSS), and the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS). I work on nature-society relations across maritime and urban contexts that are doubly impacted by disaster and enduring colonial-developmentalist dependencies, with a focus on archipelagic South and Southeast Asia. Much of my ethnographic research and teaching draw on maritime anthropology, cultural geography, and the environmental humanities. Alongside grounded theory, I've long been interested in encounters that mix methods in oral history, public folkloric praxis, Frierean pedagogical and performative/embodied approaches to storytelling.Past project themes encompass oceanic imaginaries and phenomenologies of the sea; urban futures and infrastructural change; climate-driven coastal adaptation (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and Singapore); 'Arrival' species and human-animal relations (the Dutch Caribbean); Postwar mobilities, conflict and co-operation (Sri Lanka); gender and utopic placemaking (UK). Civil service & INGO work: Writer/content developer (Climate Secretariat, Bonn); Maternal and child healthcare policy (Alola Foundation, Timor-Leste); Restorative juvenile justice and pro-poor child protection: (National Youth Council, Singapore); Labour rights; Gender and armed conflict (Sri Lanka). Skill sets: Grant writing; ethnographic research and field-based participatory methods; Academic, journalistic writing + academic editing; Teaching and training; Project co-ordination and grant management; Programme planning and evaluation; Workshop facilitation; Third sector strategic planning; Conference organising; Script writing for documentary/ethnographic filmmaking. Courses taught: Critical Development Studies (BCDSS, Bonn) Former experience (2015-2023): Development Sociology; Maritime Anthropology (University of Bremen) Ethnographic methods (Masters level): Critical reading and writing skills for the social sciences (at doctoral level, University of Bonn)
