Rafael Romero Calderón Email and Phone Number
I am a biologist and neuroscientist that became a bona fide full-time educator. In 2007 I made a career decision to dedicate all my energy to disseminating science. I entered pedagogy through a combination of planned career moves and fortuitous events.I am currently the Associate Director of Program Development and Student Engagement for the undergraduate Neuroscience Interdepartmental Program (IDP) at UCLA, and the Assistant Director of Outreach for the Brain Research Institute (BRI). I am tasked with teaching preexisting courses within the IDP, developing novel courses to improve the Neuroscience Major, identifying funding sources to implement new projects and managing the outreach programs, namely Project Brainstorm and DOPA (Drug Outreach, Promoting Awareness) Team.Previously I served as a Continuing Lecturer for the Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology (MCDB) Department, at UCLA. I exclusively taught courses for the Biomedical Research Minor, a unique program that recruits and trains promising undergraduate students that have expressed an interest in pursuing research as a career goal. You can learn more about me at: https://www.romeroscied.org/

Founder & Board MemberDecipher Something Inc. 2016 - PresentTeaching scientific knowledge is often hampered by the vast amounts of technical jargon that students need to navigate. This is particularly evident in seminar courses or journal clubs, where primary research papers are discussed. As a potential solution to this problem, I started working on building a digital database of definitions in 2016 as a tool for students. Efficient implementation of this tool required massively increasing the definition database, which was prohibitively time consuming. Thus, we designed an AI system capable of expertly writing millions of definitions in short time. We ran a non-AI proof of concept test in 3 advanced seminar style courses at UCLA to get a sense for its classroom functionality and effectiveness. Both students and instructors found it to be extremely helpful when discussing complex primary research papers. We called this initial iteration DeSci, short for “Deconstruct Science”, but have since expanded its scope to include any sphere of knowledge, which is why we now refer to our potential tool as DS, for “Decipher Something”.Our immediate next goal is to create a comprehensive terms database that spans all of the domains within the life sciences, which we speculate could easily surpass millions of terms by EOY 2024. -
