Rashiq Fataar, a visionary urbanist and CEO of Our Future Cities—an urbanism practice, consultancy, and think tank—is passionate about the people, systems, ideas, and projects shaping the future of cities and our urban lives. Rooted in Cape Town's culturally diverse and beautiful backdrop, the city serves as both his inspiration and base.Fataar's journey in urbanism spans over a decade, working across various places, scales, and disciplines in South Africa and beyond. His passion for urbanism was initially ignited by the unrealized plan for an Olympic Park adjacent to his childhood neighbourhood of Kensington.With foresight as his watchword and progress as his beacon, he enjoys being involved in both big and small ideas to influence better public spaces, urban planning, community engagement, policies, housing, and mobility solutions.Trained in actuarial science, Fataar blends analytical thinking with creative insight, supporting and advising forward-thinking businesses, government agencies, and communities. His career shift resulted in him forming Future Cape Town (now Our Future Cities), which quickly grew to become a leading platform and voice in African urbanism and sustainability.Over the past decade, Rashiq has delivered talks globally, showcasing his work in exhibitions at the Guggenheim Bilbao, the Vitra Design Museum, and the FRAC Centre. The impact of Our Future Cities has been highlighted in Icon Magazine, The Guardian, BBC Future, and Monocle TV.Fataar is on the board of The Independent School for the City in Rotterdam, advocating critical and experimental ideas for future urbanists.He has curated the Department of Design, the #cocreateDESIGN Festival, the Constructing Future Cities residency, South Africa's 1st Urban Festival, and the RISE Africa Action Festival. He is involved globally with organisations and initiatives that align with his values and has previously served on the Heritage Western Cape Impact Assessment Committee and the Board of Cape Town Tourism.‍
