About Rasim Batmaz
During my graduate program, I have focused on nanotechnology to address two global challenges; clean water and renewable energy. To do so, I was motivated to use environmentally friendly, cost effective, sustainable or commercially available nano-materials. Thus, regarding the waste water treatment, I have used cellulose nano-crystals derived from wood (pulp fiber) to remove positively charged dyes from waste water by physical adsorption. We got promising results and published a paper. After I graduate MASc, I jumped to renewable energy field for my PhD, on the other hand my supervisor Dr. Michael Tam continued improving this project and received funding of $112,000 from Grand Challenges Canada! As a PhD candidate, my target is to enhance the energy density of Li-ion batteries by replacing conventional low capacity graphite with silicon to be used as next generation Li-ion negative electrodes. During my PhD, I was one of the core members of a team leading a project with General Motors (GM) for two years. We developed a novel, economical flash heat treatment (FHT) method for fabricating silicon-based Li-ion electrodes to boost the performance and cycle capability of Li-ion batteries. In addition, we published three papers with GM in which one of them was published at one of the most prestigious journal (Nature Communications) and presented at multiple conferences.Other than research, I took teaching roles nine times during my graduate study. I supervised more than 600 students with their laboratory experiments and tutorials.Working on different areas during my graduate program has provided me with a diverse skill set such as learning and grasping difficult concepts, working well under pressure and tight deadlines, to be accurate and detail-oriented and finally to be willing to listen, share and help others...--------o---------o---------o---------o---------o---------o---------o---------o---------o---------o---------o---------o---------

Graduate Teaching Assistant
CHE 102 at the University of Waterloo is a core chemistry course for 1st year engineering students. My role is to tutor the following topics:-Stoichiometric calculations;-Properties of gases; -Properties of liquids and solutions;-Gas phase chemical equilibrium; -Ionic equilibrium in aqueous solution;-Oxidation-reduction reactions,;-Chemical kinetics.
Graduate Teaching Assistant
NE 226L at the University of Waterloo is a lab course covering several material structure characterization techniques such as XRD,Raman,FTIR. My role is to tutor basic working principles of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and teach the operation of a thermionic SEM by analyzing various samples. The labs are performed 3 days in a week with a different group of 3 students. The students learn how to load samples, set the proper aperture size and electron accelerating voltage, fix astigmation, and determine the appropriate detector (back scattering or secondary electrons) by imaging their own samples. The composition of an unknown sample is determined by energy dispersive X-ray analysis.During this lab course, I graded weekly lab reports, lab performance and lab notebooks.
Phd Candidate
Designing and engineering the electrode structure of silicon anodes for next generation Lithium-ion batteries
Graduate Teaching Assistant
CHE 290 at the University of Waterloo is a lab course covering introductory physical chemistry topics. The labs are performed two days in a week with four different groups of three students. My role was to tutor the basic concepts of each experiment and guide the students to perform a battery chemistry, and a bomb calorimetry experiment with the help of two co-op students who are trained by me and the lab instructor. Regarding the battery chemistry experiment, the basic concepts of electrochemistry, the function of battery components and the physical interpretation of Nernst equation are introduced.By using this knowledge, students evaluated the performance of a lead acid battery after charging and discharging at different rates. This showed them the effect of reaction kinetics on battery performance. In addition, they fabricated an alkaline battery and an aluminum-air battery under my supervision and tested them with different electrolytes to see the effect of electrolyte composition on battery performance. For bomb calorimetry, the constant volume and constant pressure reaction thermodynamics are introduced. Students burned two samples in a bomb calorimeter under my supervision and determined their energy content by using mass and energy balance. The accuracy of the experiment is determined by comparing the experimental values with literature.During this lab course, I graded weekly lab reports and lab performance. In addition, I helped the lab instructor to design new experiments to increase the curiosity of students.

CHE 101 at university of Waterloo is a lab course covering the basic experimentalmethods and instrumentation for the measurement of various process quantities in chemicalengineering. The primary objectives of this course are to reinforce the understanding ofchemical engineering theories and concepts from the lecture courses through hands-onexperience. My role was to tutor the students about the basic concepts of each experiment and supervise them while they perform the experiment. Regarding the solid-liquid phase binary diagram experiment, students determine the solid-liquid phase diagram of binary naphthalene-biphenyl system at atmospheric pressure using thermal analysis. With this diagram, the enthalpy of fusion for naphthalene and biphenyl are determined by using the linear regression analysis of measured freezing points. For the experiment where students used the heat exchanger, overall heat transfer coefficients of the heat exchangers are calculated, and the effect of flow velocity on overall heat transfer coefficient was examined.During this lab course, I graded weekly lab reports and lab performance.
Co-Op Student
Making quality test of water used in the vaccine (pH, turbidity, conductivity) and the preparation of solutions to be used in vaccine.
