Intra Oral Scan Tips (Mar 2018 – May 2019)For the TRIOS 4 scan tips the goal was to integrate electronics into a user friendly, premium finish, biocompatible, steam sterilizable and cleaning friendly package. Accommodating all these requirements meant extensive research and testing into materials and mechanical principles resulting in a sophisticated 2-component collapsible core injection molding tool.The design involved numerous tests of how to mechanically mount the tip onto the scanner. The end result was a bayonet snap fit design with a “satisfyingly” distinct audible and tactile feedback providing an unambiguous confirmation of correct product use.Intra Oral Scanner Inclosure (Sep 2017 – April 2018)For the development of the next generation intra oral scanner I was responsible for the majority of the injection molded parts. As a premium product the design, aesthetics and finishing detail had very high priority but at the same time lower cost and an optimized assembly principle was desired. By utilizing a novel snap-fit assembly principle and in close corporation with the toolmaker I managed to refine the design for manufacture (DFM) and elegantly hide all manufacturing “artifacts” that would otherwise compromise the holistic design created by Eskild Hansen Design Studio.The end result was lower part costs, shorter lead times, consistent quality and a robust assembly tolerance stack eliminating re-work and facilitating high volume production. All with a build quality on par with premium brands as Apple, Bang & Olufsen and the like.
