My work passions are two critical factors in business: 1) A healthy and engaging work environment for everyone: Someone once shared his view on the value of people in organizations, as we were discussing job hunting. He said: "You should talk to the head, not the ass". While the message is valid in the case of job hunting if interpreting "head" as management, the sentence also contains an intrinsic value expression: This person regards people who are not in charge as inferior. Sadly, this is a fairly common conception, and one which I am strongly opposed. No human being is more valuable than another. Now, how is it possible to grow a profitable business with this attitude?2) Developing and growing organizations:I believe that it is possible to grow a business while respecting and engaging everyone. Maybe not to the (short-term) profit margin results greed and ego can produce, but a sustainable, healthy growth that benefits all. Leading an organization this way is more complex, requires personal insight, authenticity and a highly developed skill set. Leading with fear, sticks and carrots mainly requires cash, willpower and insensitivity. Combining the two areas is possible, although they are usually addressed in the wrong order, according to my personal beliefs. Sustainable growth requires investment in the working environment. I strongly believe that this approach is the path to follow - for everyone. In short: if results are prioritised higher than the process, people are going to get hurt and history will repeat itself.
