About Raspberry Simpson
I am a recent PhD graduate in Nuclear Science and Engineering with an emphasis on plasma physics. During my graduate work, I have worked on experiments in both inertial confinement fusion and laser-driven particle acceleration. I am very interested in applying my skills in experiments, machine learning and diagnostic development to exciting projects in plasma physics. In addition, I am very passionate about outreach and broadening participation in STEM.

Lawrence Postdoctoral Fellow
Graduate Research Fellow
In this position, I studied the underlying physics of laser-driven proton acceleration in the the multi-picosecond regime by conducting experiments in short-pulse laser driven acceleration on both mid-scale and large-scale laser facilities including the Jupiter Laser Facility, OMEGA-EP, Vulcan-TAW, the National Ignition Facility-Advanced Radiographic Capability (NIF-ARC) and BELLA-HTW. In addition, I developed new diagnostic frameworks based on machine learning to analyze data automatically from high-repetition rate diagnostics and integrate data outputs using Bayesian inference techniques for enhanced physics understanding
Graduate Research Assistant
Studied fuel areal density asymmetries in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) implosions using knock-on deuteron spectroscopy and imaging at the OMEGA facility
Post-Baccalaureate Researcher
In this position, I assisted in designed a short-line-of-sight neutron imaging system for use on the National Ignition Facility to study the characteristics of deuterium-tritium ICF implosions. For this project, I characterized various scintillator types for fast-neutron imaging using Monte Carlo particle simulation tools (e.g. MNCP6 and Geant4) and designed and fielded experiments at the OMEGA laser facility and Weapons Neutron Research (WNR) facility to empirically validate simulation results. For a separate project, I assisted in the development of an electron radiography platform for the planned MARIE facility. As part of this work, I created Geant4 simulations to estimate bremsstrahlung photon background for electron radiography experiments at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and also completed these experiments with a team from Los Alamos at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory to collect radiographic data.
Research Intern
Developed a machine learning model using Python to identify unknown astronomical sources in the Fermi Large Area Telescope (FERMI-LAT) data catalog as blazars or pulsars.
Research Intern
Performed calibration testing for the front-end board electronics and photo-multiplier tubes (PMTs) used for the High Altitude Water Cherenkov Observatory (HAWC) and developed a PMT database in SQL to store PMT characteristics as a reference for the collaboration.
Research Intern
Investigated the use of cadmium sulfide quantum dots as a wavelength shifter in liquid scintillators for anti-neutrino detection. For this project, I collected data on timing, spectral response, and light output of quantum dot doped liquid scintillator and performed analysis of data sets with ROOT.
Research Intern
Constructed and tested gaseous electron multiplier (GEM) detectors for use on the OLYMPUS collaboration.
Research Intern
Created a computer simulation (C++) to model the diffusion of the auxin hormone throughout the Arabidopsis plant root.
