My research focuses on the interconnection of natural and synthetic biomaterials to develop novel porous polymeric networks for biomedical and tissue engineering applications. I am also currently involved in characterizing a novel 3D cell culture system for mouse embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells. Our goal is to determine the effects of the system on the viability, morphology, physiology, pluripotency, and differentiation capabilities of the cells lines. I take advantage of immunobiology, microscopy, biomaterials science, and chemical engineering techniques to determine how we can improve the mechanical and physical characteristics of a polymeric network to execute a particular task; be it drug delivery, vaccinations, or wound healing applications. A particular focus has been given to using chitosan (natural polymer) alongside elastin-like polypeptides (synthetic polymer) to develop temperature sensitive hydrogels with improved mechanical and physical characteristics than previous chitosan gels. My areas of experience include the following:1. Mechanical and physicochemical characterization of biomaterials via rheological techniques, scanning electron microscopy (inorganic and organic samples), transmission electron microscopy (inorganic and organic samples), swelling ratio, porosity, and FTIR.2. Experience in protein purification and characterization using SDS-PAGE, Western Blot, MALDI, UV spectrophotometry, and biological assays.3. Experience in primary myeloma, embryonic, induced pluripotent, fibroblast, and T cell culture.4. Experience in RNA purification and analysis using quantitative real-time PCR.5. Currently undergoing training in multicolor flow cytometry for cell surface and internal protein expression. 6. Currently undergoing training in confocal microscopy.7. Experience in mouse work (lung isolation, spleen isolation, bronchoalveolar fluid isolation, bone marrow isolation, blood drawing).8. Experience with ELISA assays.
Listed skills include Sterilization, Autocad, Elisa, Aspen Plus, and 41 others.
