Going into this job, I had a strong knowledge of FASD and its impact on behaviour so I expected to have no trouble adapting to this environment. But I quickly learned that FASD is incredibly complex and that it affects every single child differently. This required me to be flexible in managing different situations and understand the crisis strategies and protocol for each child. One of my roles was leading the science room activities for two weeks. I programmed a different activity for each day, keeping the abilities of the campers in mind, and received fantastic feedback from both the children and my fellow counsellors. Some favourites included plastic bag ice cream, lego and circuit stations, and a spaghetti build challenge.I gained valuable self-regulation skills and am much more resilient in the face of stress and difficult or unexpected situations. I am also certified in UMAB (understanding and managing aggressive behaviours). Show less

I have been dancing since I was 4 years old, and am always shocked by the high price point of high-quality instructional classes. Not only are the… Show more In January of 2016, I founded Pointed Toes Dance Studio, a home-based studio that provides small, affordable dance classes for young aspiring children who may not feel comfortable in large groups. I have been dancing since I was 4 years old, and am always shocked by the high price point of high-quality instructional classes. I was fortunate enough to grow up in a household where affording such expenses were financially possible, but this is not the case for everyone. Not only are the classes expensive, but shoes, leotards, and costumes are also quite costly. This inspired me to start my own studio and offer more children the chance to learn to dance. Each class costs only $5 and has the added bonus of being limited to five students. This helps my students feel more comfortable if they have no previous experience and builds their self-confidence. Students sign up for 8 weeks at a time, after which they can invite their families to come and see what they have learned during a short "demonstration". My students learn to perform for an audience and can demonstrate their talents to a small group of supporters. I have received incredible feedback about my teaching, and have built strong connections with many of my students. Looking back, I can see the incredible progress that each child has made, and I am always amazed.
