About Raven Sim

Hi! My name is Raven and I am a Computer Engineering graduate from the University of Waterloo. I am a dancer, a teacher, and an entrepreneur, and have an extreme love of cats.__________Accessibility is one of my strongest values and passions. It shapes the work that I do and the way that I interact with the world. I dream of one day living in a society where everyone can access the services they need without barriers.As the founder of Pointed Toes Dance Studio, I established an affordable way for young children to learn ballet and jazz. By limiting each class to five students, I created a space for students with less confidence to thrive in their learning without fear of failure or being judged. Each class costs only $5, making it accessible to families of all income levels. Classes are currently on hold while I pursue my undergraduate degree, but I plan on reopening following my graduation in 2024.My most meaningful volunteer experience exposed me to the world of visual impairment through my work as a 1:1 support for a young blind child at my church. I was surprised at how few systems were in place to ensure she was integrated into the activities. I offered my time every week to assist her and quickly learned how to give her independence while ensuring she felt safe. I also took it upon myself to learn braille and adapted the Sunday School lessons and modified games to fit her set of abilities. My work ensured that she felt safe and comfortable in her environment and allowed her to form bonds with her peers. My vision for a better future includes better integration of the visually impaired into seeing communities.I believe that technology should be designed with accessibility as a priority. We are all equally human, and technology can be a powerful tool to unite us when there is division.
