Art Director
As Art Director I was responsible for all aspects of the output of the Borah Teamwear Art Department. This included day to day Art Department schedule management, project management, Art Department policy creation, implementation, and enforcement, and contribution to the completion of day-to-day Art Department commitments. I was responsible for the performance of three in house graphic designers, six freelance graphic designers, and one freelance software developer.Accomplishments include: • Development of Borah Teamwear’s 3D Design Viewer • Reducing the Borah Teamwear Art Department defect rate by 50-90% through the successful development of an automated art proofing script used for proofing art for errors prior to print. • Development of Borah Teamwear’s freelance artist program, which has provided a dynamic outlet for production art labor need during times of over-scheduled capacity, and has had the added benefit of providing a talent base from which to draw new in-house graphic designers as needed.
Production Artist
As a Production Artist, I was responsible for my share of the daily art schedule. This included responsibilities like marker production, marker proofing, design, and product development. In this position I went from being someone who simply knows how to use Adobe Illustrator, to someone who is expert in Illustrator. I spent 8-10 hours per day immersed in this program. I was enriched by this position in a variety of ways and it would make clear to me my path upward within the company.
Print Technician
My position as a Digital Print Tech included my meeting all aspects of the production requirements of the Print Department, along with the maintenance and upkeep of Mimaki JV4 and JV5 wide format digital printers. Through this experience I also became versed in the function and use of Wasatch digital RIP software, the software used at Mt. Borah to drive our Mimaki printers.Additional duties included maintaining consistent color output on Mt. Borah print jobs through management of multiple print profiles and digital art inputs. This meant rigorous cataloging and maintaining our archive of past print jobs to ensure client's reorder color matched the color of the original order. This is the place where I really began to cut my teeth as an effective user of Adobe Illustrator. By beginning my design career using Illustrator as a tool to proof art for pre-press, as I did in this position, as opposed to learning about Illustrator from a creative design perspective, as most user do, I feel I have a unique perspective in all of the creative ways Illustrator can be used. My technical expertise in Adobe products informs my sense of what's possible in creative design. I gained this expertise working in the Print Room at Borah Teamwear.
Customer Service Representative
I began my career at Mt. Borah in Customer Service. At the time it was a small bicycle clothing company that had recently moved into the custom team apparel market. I was brought on board to help with management of this booming new business. At the peak I handled over 80 accounts. Being custom clothing, all of those accounts were different with varying needs and values. This is where I first heard of Adobe Illustrator and became interested in it's use. I got to work in Illustrator because at that point the Customer Service folks also helped out in the Art Department. I also became familiar with Sage50 accounting software and Microsoft Excel along with many other commonly used computer systems.I really came to appreciate working with people in this position. I had the opportunity to work with folks from all over the country, and world, and really began forming my worldview as a young man doing this work.
