• Related to Head-Based Hydropower:- Develop algorithms and software tools incorporated into Excel and/or MATLAB/Python to automate the system for design, installation, and commissioning workflows for the company’s standard modular hydropower commercial business.• Related to In-Current Hydrokinetic Energy Conversion:- Incorporate high-level guidance from industry research experts in electric machines, hydrodynamics, and controls to develop physics-based, multi-disciplinary, parametric models for turbine components and their controls that apply co-design and control co-design (CD/CCD) methods to capture dynamic effects. Apply them to perform trades among MHK system topologies.- Develop models and perform hydrodynamic and structural analysis of various MHK options and control surface motions. (May require adapting wind power simulation models for use in MHK research and development).- Define laboratory tests, data acquisition, and analyze results to reduce risk related to materials, maneuverability, power generation, and structure including experimental validation of load margins achieved through CD/CCD.- Define pilot-scale real-world deployment of prototype device, monitoring and data acquisition systems, and analyze results to validate performance and load margin goals.• Related to Coupled Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) Systems : FE & SPH Numerical Modeling- Perform numerical modeling of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) systems for hydrodynamic modeling of WEC devices incorporating finite element analysis (FEA) and, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solvers and, calibrate them with laboratory experiments and open water deployment and testing.

DOE Project(s): “Control Optimization of Renewable Energy Devices Leveraging Real-Time Ocean Wave Prediction”.• Experimental investigations using wave measurement devices and (numerical) development of real-time wave prediction algorithms and hydrodynamic modeling to be used in optimal control of wave-energy devices (WEC)/topologies.▪ Experimental investigations:- Model testing of different wave energy devices (Wave Labs: OSU and Berkeley | Ocean: Santa Cruz).- Development of novel approaches (using signal processing techniques and data analysis/visualization tools) to measure wave-free-surface motion using different wave measurement devices in near real-time.▪ Numerical code development:- Development and implementation of linear/higher-order/Auto-Regressive hydrodynamic wave forecastmodels (hydrodynamic modeling) in deep/shallow water regimes (bathymetry) within the wave prediction numerical code framework.▪ Part of the team that demonstrated ~300% improvement in energy output from a WEC topology by performing several in-ocean wave measurement campaigns to enable a robust application of controls at sea with suitable hardware (HW) and software (SW) integration.▪ Developed patents, and PowerPoint presentations for quarterly/annual review meetings and write grant proposals to secure external funding for offshore renewable energy projects.
