Solidaire is a membership community of people with wealth who are committed to supporting progressive social movements which address crucial needs now, next year and beyond. We aim to respond quickly and nimbly to urgent needs, while also making long-term sustained commitments to build movement infrastructure.Solidaire began with the desire to answer a single question: What is the role of financial resources in supporting social movements that are fighting for deep systemic change?In 2011, movements shook the globe. From the Arab Spring to anti-austerity protests in Europe, and Occupy Wall Street here at home, we witnessed the power of collective action – of individuals and communities taking to the streets and putting their bodies on the line to make their voices heard. It was surprising and challenging. What did these protesters want? Why was such disruption necessary? These movements upended the status quo, both in their vision and in their tactics.Watching these events unfold led to reflection on the history of social movements, and the realization that they often take decades to achieve their goals. Deep structural change takes massive shifts in culture and narratives, as well as in social, political and economic institutions. This included the selection of regional and political focuses for the campaigns; developing educational, advocacy and organizing materials; and supporting on the ground campaign organizing being done by over 5,000 local church, school, college and community based organizations across the country. And, serve on OA’s Asia Grants Review Committee.

Co-led the 1986 donor and activist delegation to Nicaragua and Honduras to see distribution of agricultural tools and supplies, and witness firsthand the devastating impact of the US supported contra war and the U.S embargo on Nicaragua.

Key Responsibilities: Support the organizing and educational activities of over 200 Massachusetts churches, schools, colleges and community organizations participation in OA’s Fast for a World Harvest. Serve as lead organizer and spokesperson on second half of Oxfam’s cross-country Tools for Peace & Justice Caravan collecting agricultural tools and supplies for Nicaragua, in direct opposition to the US imposed embargo against that country. Help coordinate successful grassroots lobbying campaign to reverse State Department’s decision to block Oxfam's shipment of collected agricultural tools and supplies to Nicaragua.

Key Responsibilities: Help raise awareness about Seva’s work on blindness prevention and control in India and Nepal. Organized and host Indian cultural and film festival to draw support from large South Asian community in the region. Organize a food collection and distribution program to support local food pantries during the period of deep economic crisis in the region in the early 80s.
