About Ravinder Kumar
I am an Associate Professor of Monitoring and Impact at Natural Resources Institute, University of Greenwich, UK. I have experiences in international development and research relating to poverty, livelihoods, agriculture, natural resource management, responsible business investments, social enterprises, climate change and sustainability certification in agricultural commodities. For over more than two decades, I have provided monitoring and evaluation support to organisations and programmes in many sectors. I have conducted numerous programme and performance evaluations, including evaluations of multi-partner, multi-country alliances, and networks. Similarly, I have facilitated design and implementation of monitoring, evaluation and learning systems. I have led on sustainability research in many agricultural commodities such as palm oil, cotton, soybean, cocoa, cashew, sugarcane, groundnut. Overall I have experiences in diverse monitoring and evaluation works using both qualitative and quantitative methods, statistical analysis, outcome mapping, contribution tracing, the theory of change-based impact evaluations, experimental (randomised control trials) and quasi-experimental research etc. I also have more than a decade of experiences in leading, advising (or being part of) projects working towards developing and upgrading agricultural and tree crop value chains. With many teams of colleagues, I have implemented value chain development, livelihoods, integrated water resource management and local economic development projects in India. I have long-term experience in India and professional experiences in many other countries in Africa, Asia – Sierra Leone, Zambia, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Ghana, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Cambodia.

CurrentWorking with a multi-cultural, inter-disciplinary and international team of specialists and experts (in different domains), my work at the University is dedicated to improving process and performance management in international development to benefit low-income families in developing countries. My role and responsibility at NRI and within the University include; contributing to growing the enterprise portfolio and capacities in monitoring and evaluation, expanding NRI’s footprint and partnerships in South Asia, and leading on experimental (randomised control trials) and longitudinal research in many sectors. Working with dynamic colleagues at IFFDC based at Pratapgarh (Raj), we designed a monitoring and impact assessment system for a component of the Western India Rainfed Farming project (supported by DFID), being implemented by IFFDC in tribal areas. We called the system as Process Evaluation Management Information System (PEMIS) that immensely contributed to understanding program efficiency, quality and impact.
