Ph.D (Awarded) : Researched the use of Fibre Metal Laminate (FML) for crashworthy application by investigating its axial crushing response. This research was part of a collaborative research project including the Cooperative Research Centre for Advanced Composite Structures (CRC-ACS) and the University of New South Wales (UNSW). The investigated specimen was a top hat structure which could be envisaged as a stiffening member for existing structure or as a single unit of repeating pattern of the corrugated beam. During this research experiments and simulations were carried out at different tiers. Crushing test was carried out on metals, composite and fibre metal laminates. Material characterisation aided the process of calibrating the material models which could accurately predict failure of composites. Explicit finite element analysis simulations using LS-Dyna enabled accurate modelling of the complex crushing behaviour of fibre metal laminates.
