The institute works with patients to help advance medical research and find new treatments and therapies for these conditions.As an intern at the Princeton Medical Institute, I had the opportunity to work on clinical trials for Alzheimer's disease patients. Throughout my internship, I worked alongside research coordinators and doctors to develop a deep understanding of the clinical research process. During my time at the institute, I gained valuable experience in various areas such as patient recruitment, data entry, and patient screening. One of the highlights of my internship was being able to conduct memory testing under the guidance of experienced research coordinators. Another was identifying trends and patterns in our pre-screening recruitment methods by analyzing statistics in Excel, allowing me to provide insights and recommendations for improving our recruitment efforts. Furthermore, I developed excellent communication skills by learning to effectively communicate the benefits and risks of clinical trial participation and address patients' concerns and questions. Overall, my time at the Princeton Medical Institute allowed me to gain valuable skills and insights into the field of clinical research.

The Essex-Passaic Wellness Coalition (EPWC) is a diverse partnership of hospitals, health care workers, and volunteers whose mission is to reduce the burden of cancer and other chronic diseases on residents of Essex and Passaic Counties, New Jersey. I am using qualitative research methods using focus groups to grasp a better background for several factors. Attitudes, beliefs, thoughts, decisions, behavior will be monitored as it relates to COVID-19 immunizations and boosters, bivalent boosters, pediatric vaccines, and cancer screenings. The population that I will be engaging with is communities of color, specifically women of color. Through this project, I develop qualitative research knowledge, skills, and understanding. This helps me understand how to recruit for, set-up, run, and analyze focus groups. I help contribute to the EPWC's mission of reducing the burden and incidence of cancer and chronic disease by engaging with key community members, establishing new community partnerships, and helping with digital and social media campaigns.

The role of the medical assistant at Rome Medical Practice is to provide administrative and clinical support to the physicians and physician extenders of the practice. This requires a highly organized individual who can safely manage more than one task at a time and move efficiently through varied responsibilities. I assisted physicians, nurses, and other medical staff in orthopedic, OB/GYN, and urologist offices in performing examinations and lab tests for 20+ patients per day. I was able to build on my knowledge of patient care, medical terminology, and reference tools. I prepared charts for upcoming scheduled patients to include relevant medical records, reports, and testing. I scheduled patient appointments and medical procedures in the EMR under the direction of the medical staff. I ensured that exam rooms were stocked with adequate medical supplies and disinfected following patient examinations.

I worked with a team of physicians who employed a multi-faceted approach to combat the causes of pain, to help patients combat acute and chronic pain issues.I helped prepare patients, medications, and assist 4 full-time physicians for procedures such as trigger point injections, epidurals, facet nerve blocks, and radiofrequency nerve ablations. I performed clerical duties such as word processing, data entry, answering phones, scheduling patients’ appointments, and filing for procedures in the surgery center. I ensured cleanliness, sanitation, and maintenance of all facilities, exam rooms, and equipment and helped implement quality assurance that results in compliance with HIPAA regulations.

I used SPSS for statistical analysis for 3 different studies. I shadowed ER physicians Dr. Afsar A. Khan and Dr. William S. Gaetano. I observed diverse emergencies such as strokes, chest pains, broken bones, and low acuity situations. I gained important knowledge and insight about the life of an emergency medicine physician and working in this high-intensity environment. With the doctors, I had the opportunity to apply knowledge and diagnosis. I was able to experience over 200 patient contacts.
