I have been a practising Solicitor for over 30 years. I was Managing Partner of Bells Potter, one of the largest firms in Surrey for ten years and steered the firm successfully through the early 1990s recession. As a corporate lawyer I saw businesses through challenging times and, in early 2000s, with a colleague developed the Strategic Planning toolkit which has been used by companies and individuals across the US and Europe. Realising that Solicitors would be facing unprecedented competition with the implementation of the Legal Services Act 2007, I began offering advice, training and mentoring to firms through Legal Mentors Limited which enabled me to see that the traditional business model of the partnership no longer works for Solicitors and will become increasingly vulnerable in new regulatory regime. My colleagues from Legal Mentors and I concluded that a franchise structure would enable Solicitors to get on with what they're good at - giving top quality advice to their clients - while the actual business activities were made easy for them by the franchisor.
