I am an artist and writer currently teaching at Ohio University.The bulk of my work examines the interplay between fantasy and history in abandoned industrial areas. I have photographed extensively in Northeastern Pennsylvania and South Wales where I was an Artist in Residence at the University of Wales, Newport in 2005. The resulting project, Black Deserts/ Welsh Tips has been exhibited widely in a number of American and Welsh venues. My most recent work, Carbon Analog explores mining areas as analogs for imagined extraterrestrial sites. I am currently an Assistant Professor at Ohio University where I have taught for the past five years. During my time here, I have been the instructor for a variety of graduate and undergraduate courses ranging from introductory courses to graduate seminars and critiques. practice.In addition to my teaching responsibilities I have been the supervisor of the Photography Lab since 2009. In this capacity I am responsible for general upkeep of the lab, purchase of supplies and equipment and the supervision of graduate and undergraduate workers.Prior to attending the International Center of Photography’s General Studies program in 2001, I taught English Composition and Literature at Rutgers University for 25 years. I am also well versed in theory and as a result, of my background in the Humanities I bring a cross disciplinary sensibility into the classroom. This interest is evident in a number of courses and special sections I have taught including Photography and the Moving Image, The Sublime and the Uncanny and Photography and History and Artists' Writing.I have published essays in a variety of journals including High Performance, SITES, and Exposure.My essay on the film maker James Benning is forthcoming in Raritan Quarterly.
