I am accountable for the SLA rated day to day manned and physical security operations of joint Government owned Air Traffic Control Centre at National Air Traffic Services, Prestwick. Disruption to this site could cause major distress for hundreds of thousands of people, substantial financial penalties and possibilities of smaller flight companies ceasing business. I developed a training technique to ensure recency and a consistent service across the security team. This was recently recorded as a best practice during an external SIA audit. I control the manned guarding security budget which includes training, uniform and security equipment. I have recently been outsourcing and evaluating tenders for best service for planned maintenance/emergency call out service from contractors and followed process to get them on approval suppliers register. I have working knowledge of British Standards - Screening BS7858; Key Egress BS3621; HVM Equipment PAS 68; Information Technology BS27001; CCTV BS7958; Lone Worker BS8484; Static Site Guarding BS7499; Fences BS1722; Locks BS3621; Aware of British Stands for Access Control BS EN 60839; Remote Centres BS8951; Burglary Classes ENV1627. During my career i have been subject to external audits from National Security Inspectorate, SIA and British Security Industry Authority, all were passed. I have managed a few recent projects one of which was installation of security measures that mirror security processes at all airports to screen person(s) coming on site. After successful installation; testing, training and continual service of the equipment was established to ensure expected delivery of service was achieved. During all projects I engaged with key stakeholders (client, contractors, on site management) and would continue regular communication to ensure all are across the project.
  • Mitie
    Operational Security Manager
    Mitie Dec 2013 - Jan 2015
    Scottish Region
To manage over 30 manned security sites, some rated on the CPNI scale and government buildings. My experience and expertise was used to help provide a security service that met the business requirement to the satisfaction of clients. The aim at all times was to Detect, Deter, Deny and Delay security threats to all different types of businesses and locations, from city centre buildings to remote, lone working sites. All HR issues were the responsibility of the Operations Manager where investigations, disciplinary and grievance meetings were scheduled, minuted and actioned within the company policies. I regularly met with clients/directors to ensure that their site Assignment Instructions were up to date, along with Site Security Risk Assessments and Health and Safety Risk Assessments. I was always keen to ensure the security teams and service were efficient and introduced technology to assist the Officers, which did reduce costs at times but not quality of the security service. During time as Operations Manager and time at NATS I managed outsourced manned guarding contractors and Security Management Systems (SMS) contractors. Regular SLA meetings and audits would be held to catch up on recent activity, completed works or standards of work being carried out. SMS Contractors work would be assessed by me and aided by on site engineers to ensure agreed works were completed to expectations. Where expectations were not met, opportunity was given for an agreeable resolve with support and deadline of task. Where any on-going issues had not been satisfactorily resolved Quality Reports were submitted to ensure full support of the contractor was given to the site representative by the contracting company. During a restructure at the Glasgow city centre contract new security procedures, manning and policies were required to be rolled out to the security team and the onsite FM manager. There were challenges but with a clear vision the new model became business as usual.

To manage/motivate/develop a 30+ strong security team to secure the BBC Scotland Broadcasting House and Scottish prime time drama film set, including Mailroom to ensure screening and escalation measures of all incoming letters and parcels were in place and being practised. Provide quotes for services and ensure security risk assessments were up to date and relative, for live and recorded TV and Radio shows to provide effective security protection to mitigate loss in transmission or damage to assets. Notable shows include Children In Need, Mrs Browns Boys, live Hogmanay TV & Radio shows, regular TV and Radio Main News. Provide contingency plans to follow when the Broadcasting House became a target for protesters attempting to gain unauthorised entry. Liaise with Police Scotland to investigate all lines of threats to the business and staff working within the building and find a resolve or contingency plan. Assist Special Branch Police with planning of VIP visits to provide safe and secure entry point, route through site and exit. Notable visits include Prince and Duchess of Wales, Prime Minister, Scottish First Minister. I gathered Security Intelligence through channels like Operation Griffin help to Prepare, Plan, Prevent and Protect valuable assets that could be a target and threatend from international or home grown terrorism. The intelligence gathered was shared with surrounding business, Police Scotland and the Senior BBC Scotland Management Team – I was successful not have any loss of broadcast and contingency plans proved effective to keep staff safe and site secure. Monitoring employees and noticing changes in behaviour/high turnover in staff/having a motivated security team helps to detect insider threat.
