I am an avid freedive spearfisherman. For those of you who might not know what that is, it entails diving with a snorkel and fins (no tanks), swimming to depths anywhere from 10 – 100+ feet and spearing a fish with either a speargun or pole spear. Professional success is something that is much like freedive spearfishing. One must adequately prepare, equipping yourself with what it takes to perform… whether that be the ability to swim for miles and hold your breath for minutes at a time, or the ability to comfortably command a room in the face of uncertainty. One must be well organized. Spearfishing involves site scouting, gear prep, and of course, getting the boat ready. In the professional world, these are things such as market knowledge, presentation decks, project plans, revenue forecasts, product roadmaps, etc. One must be adaptable. Maybe you miss a fish but have enough breath to go after another. Maybe your weight belt falls off. You must be ready for whatever’s thrown at you when you’re submerged. If you’re submerged by a current project with specific goals, but business needs call for a pivot, you need to have the agility to reprioritize as needed and be mission-driven to still hit all attainable goals. One must be a team player. In the ocean, this goes without saying – always buddy up; it could save your life.
