Before retiring in February 2016 Prof. Pine was Dean of the Faculty of Management and Hospitality in VTC’s Technological & Higher Education Institute (THEi) since March 2012. At THEi he lead the development and accreditation of six honours degree programmes (Sports & Recreation Management; Culinary Arts & Management; Hotel Operations Management; Professional Accounting; Public Relations and Management; and Retail Management). All these programmes were accredited by HKVAAVQ. These accreditations were the latest of a career spent doing similar work on behalf of college/university programmes as well as sitting on accreditation panels.Prof. Pine started his academic career in 1977 working on the first UK Polytechnic-based degree in hotel/catering management at Huddersfield Polytechnic. He came to Hong Kong in 1987 to open Hong Kong’s first degree in hotel and catering management. He was course leader and worked on developing a tourism degree, created a part-time version of the hotel and catering degree and led the development of an MSc in Hotel and Tourism Management at Hong Kong Polytechnic University which was also launched in China. He was Head of their Department of Hotel and Tourism Management for three years. Taking early retirement in 2004 he spent 7 years working on various projects, including teaching on Hospitality/Tourism masters programmes at ESSEC, France and IMI in Switzerland. He was a visiting professor of Strathclyde University and Visiting Research Fellow of Sheffield Hallam University. He is Academic Advisor to Hotel and Tourism discipline of the College of Professional and Continuing Education of Hong Kong Polytechnic University, an honorary professor of Hong Kong University’s School of Professional and Continuing Education and registered hotel and tourism specialist for the HKCAAVQ.
