Now happily retired, I started my working life as a trainee accountant where I worked until being offered a job in public relations at Jodrell Bank Observatory by Dr. Ann Cohen.I worked initially as Planetarium operator in 1979, eventually becoming Planetarium controller. In the 1980’s I took on the responsibility of exhibits in the concourse building and also conducted tours around the visitor centre, arboretum and parts of the research block including the telescopes. My monthly Jodrell News newsletter proved very popular with the public & I gave public talks about the observatory to clubs around the U.K. & even abroad when holidaying in Malta, France, Netherlands.Meeting visitors also gave me the opportunity to get involved with ideas in the construction of The Planetron in the Netherlands, where I was invited to the opening ceremony. I was also invited to many U.K. observatories and also the Paris Observatory & Pic du MIDI.My last few years before retirement saw me as a senior buyer and when I at last retired, I decided to devote most of my time to travelling and writing as a freelance writer on the subjects of astronomy, space exploration and my other great love, classical music.I am a founder member of the Audley/Aixe-sur-Vienne twinning association.I also hope to continue some voluntary work for my local RSPCA branch (Staffordshire north) where I have contributed for the last 30 years along with my wife.
