About Ray Gogel
I started my working life in academia--philosophy to be exact. To some, it seems a long road from writing philosophy to work in utility transformation. Actually, it is not. Philosophy—at least the parts of it that intrigue me—is about understanding ranges of meaning in human culture. To the degree that each business is first and foremost the reflection of the cultural threads that weave it together, I have found my ‘business’ career to be a treasure trove for applying philosophical concepts in a practical way to drive change, innovation and new business models. And, to the degree that successful business models need to capture more than simply a financial advantage in order to be sustainable—i.e., they need to reflect the hearts and minds of their people in a fulfilling way—the models that have inspired me tend to combine people and process in a transformational way.It is all the more surprising, then that my business career has been revolved around the utility industry, a place where change comes hard, where disruptive models appear, hold momentary promise and then often wither away. What was once an irresistible force for business model disruption, today has often become identified with the slow moving protector of the status quo.Like many others, I believe those days are numbered. The way forward will require leaders that embrace disruption and build teams capable of inspiring innovation by capturing the hearts and minds of customers, employees and, yes, even regulators.My entire career has been concerned with these core themes of leadership, transformation and innovation and I intend to spend the rest of my working days focused on these areas.
