Executive Director

Current

Canby, Oregon

I helped steward over $5.9M in cash and in-kind donations in 2023 leading staff and over 600 volunteers in over 28,000 human service touchpoints. Since I began in 2015, the Canby Center has experienced 1,129% growth in revenue from $480K to $5.9M and we have nearly tripled the number of services provided annually. In addition I am helping lead staff in a successful $10M capital campaign to expand our facilities and programs. The campaign will result in a planned tripling in square footage of our facility to over 17,000 sqft. including classrooms, offices, and dedicated food warehousing and food cold storage.

Sep 2015 - Present

Development Manager

Portland, Oregon Area

Report to Executive Director, work closely with Board of Trustees, and the executive leadership team of Program Manager, Warehouse Supervisor, and Office Manager. The 14 staff and hundreds of volunteers of BCS address poverty through food redistribution to nearly 1,000 working-poor families in the Portland Metro area annually. I direct all fund raising, communications, and information technology for BCS. When I joined BCS I found an organization that needed someone to refine and share their amazing story more broadly. Development systems were rudimentary and constituent communication was infrequent and unproductive. I helped increase total revenue from $9.2M to $12M in less than two years. Advise ED regarding development strategies. I engaged the board in shaping a five-year strategic vision. In addition to forecasting financial and product donations, I advised on future threats and opportunities. Coordinate between distinct groups of staff, executive leadership team, board, and grant writer to advocate for needed resources. Network with local government representatives and other organizations, i.e., initiate town hall meeting on food security. Lead staff and volunteers in hosting events.Personally secured 211 cash gifts and 29 new product donors who have contributed 336,560 pounds of food and clothing valued at $505K. Planned and completed a $45,000 campaign to building a new technology-equipped classroom. Secured participation in the Season of Sharing with the Oregonian Newspaper resulting in a full front page article on Thanksgiving Day and $30K+ in new support. Presented the BCS story entitled “An Uncommon Response to Poverty” to over 20 Rotary, Kiwanis, and Lions clubs. Redesigned the BCS website using WordPress. Planned, resourced, and helped manage a $60K migration to the SalesForce database.

Aug 2013 - Sep 2015

Director Of Development

Portland, Oregon Area

I chose SMART – Start Making A Reader Today, because I wanted to make a difference for a cause I am passionate about… reading. SMART trains and manages over 9,000 volunteer readers through annual revenue of $2.7M and approximately 20 staff. I reported to the Executive Director and co-supervised ten direct reports who were each responsible for regional program and development efforts. I worked closely with executive team peers including the Finance Director, Program Director, and Communications Director. Challenged by leading a team of regional Program Directors with recently assigned development responsibilities, I implemented accountability and tracking measures to assess effectiveness. I traveled around the state to train, support and model Major Donor relations for the Program Directors. In six months I led Fiscal YTD contributions to a position of more than $500K over the same six month period in the prior year.

Jul 2012 - Dec 2012

Vice President Of Advancement

North America

Reported to the CEO and supervised the Communications Coordinator. I worked with executive peers who were responsible for program, recruitment, partnerships, and finance. With a staff of ten and annual revenue of over $500K, Arrow Leadership provides leadership development to Christian leaders across North America. I led all development efforts including major investor, foundation, corporate, and annual fund donor relations. One of the challenges at Arrow was a top-heavy and limited donor base as well as a wide geographic service range including all of the US and Canada. I helped increase annual giving from $381K to $418K. I also wrote and secured $428K in grants from 14 foundations including a large collaborative grant to establish an Arrow cohort in the Northwest. I implemented a cloud-based information system unifying four disparate systems handling recruitment, finance, program delivery, and development.

Aug 2010 - May 2012

Director Of Development

Portland, Oregon Area

Reported to the Vice President of Advancement and led a team of five in annual fundraising efforts including grant writing, corporate relations, special events, direct mail, and phone campaigns. Challenges present at MU included an unclear and marginally compelling vision. I advocated for a vision which appealed to both traditional alumni and progressive community supporters. I established FY goals and helped to raise $3M annually through a team approach. In FY 2010, I personally cultivated 75 Major Donors toward $362,000 of support.

Jan 2005 - Aug 2010

Interim Executive Director Of Advancement

Portland, Oregon Area

Reported to the Vice President of Advancement and restructured an ingrown development team of ten to become more results-focused. Assisted in planning and implementation of a $2.8M+ capital campaign for a new student center, directly managed $400K for three departmental budgets and gave oversight to Advancement, Planned Giving, and Alumni departments. Established MU’s Legacy Society which promotes gift planning and has since grown to become a sizable portion of MU’s contributed income.

Jan 2004 - Dec 2005

Director Of Marketing Team Technical Services

Portland, Oregon Area

Following the implementation of a brand new data system I collaborated with the Information Technology Director and his team to strengthen the information management of Advancement, Financial Aid, Alumni, and Communications departments. Understanding the work processes of the departments and the technological abilities of the team members, as well as the database and its capabilities enabled me to translate between the technology and the users. Adapted the database to automate work flow processes and minimize paperwork. Designed and built communications and information analysis systems and generated multi-dimensional SQL analytical reports. On a cornerstone project I led a team with representatives from Financial Aid, Advancement, and the Business Office to synthesize information regarding scholarship tracking to acquire and equitably distribute scholarship funds.

Jan 2001 - Dec 2004

Director Of Alumni Services

Portland, Oregon Area

With a new president in leadership and the alumni director retiring, I was able to develop several alumni initiatives for increased alumni engagement. I reported to the Vice President of Advancement and had one part-time and one full-time direct report who handled alumni communications. Communication systems were in need of improvement to connect well with our alumni. I created a program for Alumni Lifetime Learning Benefits where alumni qualified to audit a course for free once a year. I also reengaged many alumni and increased deferred giving through establishing the 50 Year Alumni Society for graduates from 50 years ago to be honored with a special medallion and ceremony at graduation time.
