Specific was acquired in May 2022 by bioMerieux Inc for $425 M. My role at Specific included leadership of, development, manufacturing, and operations. At various stages of the company’s growth I was also responsible for marketing, customer engagements, fund raising, finance, and business development.Specific produces a system for determining the effective antibiotic treatment for life threatening infections. Specific’s novel technology responds to the metabolomic signature of microorganisms enabling rapid detection, identification, and treatment of bacterial and fungal infections. Specific’s bench top instruments include complex image processing, machine-learning-based decision algorithms, control software, optics and electromechanical components, and firmware. The system has first been applied to bloodstream infection which leads to sepsis. The system is lifesaving, sepsis is responsible for more than half of all deaths in hospitals. The market is multi-billion; sepsis is the most expensive condition treated in hospitals.

iSense developed a unique identification technology. Analogous to a camera using photons and software imitating animal sight and recognition, the iSense sensor uses small volatile molecules and machine-learning-based decision algorithms to identify, imitating animal recognition by scent. Many animals rely on sent more than sight, this teaches us that there is tremendous information about the world that goes uncaptured by our mobile devices. The mission of iSense was to create a low-cost sensing system that could capture this information to solve common and important problems in the enterprise, consumer, military, and medical fields.

During my tenure at Symbol Technologies the company grew from $20 M to over $2 B annual revenue. Symbol was acquired by Motorola in 2007 for $3.9 B then subsequently by Zebra (NASDAQ: ZBRA) in 2014. After starting as an engineer, I held increasing positions including, VP Engineering, SVP Marketing, General Manager, and CTO. Symbol developed mobile computers, wireless networks, and sensor technologies for use in enterprise businesses including, manufacturing, supply chain (warehouse and transportation), retailers, and healthcare.

Indirectly, I led teams for sales, channel, field service, finance, and other operating components.Symbol pioneered mobile computers before iPhones and wireless networks (WiFi). Building upon our technical expertise, products, and strong IP portfolio we were the first-to-market with WiFi products. This included a line of mobile (handheld) computers, client cards and a chip set, and infrastructure side access points. We introduced a WiFi network infrastructure switch; an innovation whose architecture was so superior it was copied by the rest of the industry. We were the leading supplier of wireless client cards as an OEM to 6 fortune 50 companies and a joint partner with Intel leading to their Centrino chip set.
