5Th Grade English Language Arts Teacher
Current* Honored to accept principal's request to transition to fifth grade based on results achieved with previous fourth grade classes.* Assisted over 120 students in becoming more confident communicators by utilizing reading and writing workshop strategies to improve their active listening, comprehension, writing style, writing craft, and ability to write for varied audiences.* Supported students in better recognizing and managing their feelings and being more empathetic to the feelings of others by incorporating core competencies of social-emotional learning into daily morning meetings.* Led 5 person committee tasked with reprioritizing existing school schedule resulting in increased instructional time, more equitable distribution of planning time, and increased teacher satisfaction.* Deepened student respect for Asian and African cultures by comparing and contrasting their political systems, economies, religions, societal lives, world contributions, and geographical areas with the United States.* Challenged students with creating 50+ page original screenplay to increase writing stamina, gain practice developing characters, and to hone their ability to execute a fully developed story.* Improved students ability to regulate behavior, make informed decisions, and set and achieve goals by carving out time during the week to explicitly teach executive functioning skills (e.g., self-control, time management, organization).* Developed young consumers with the ability to make informed financial decisions by exposing students to fundamental literacy concepts and economic principles (e.g., credit, debit, checking, savings, want v. need, supply and demand).* Researched, organized, and chaperoned enrichment field trips for students to make learning fun and to expose them to unique experiences they will fondly recall later in life.
