Profile bio

About Rayna Fitzgerald

Since graduating with honors from UC Berkeley with a bachelor of science in Conservation and Resource Studies, I have had the pleasure of working with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife as a scientific Aid in Region 3. My position has allowed me to work with a variety of wildlife species including Tule elk, Salt Marsh Harvest mice, California Tiger Salamanders, and more! In February 2024, I presented a research poster at the Western Section of the Wildlife Society Conference titled "Small Mammal Use of Emergent Macrophytes in an Accreting Tidal Wetland." I'm interested in a range of human- environment interactions including urban ecology, urban wildlife, environmental justice, and climate change adaptation and mitigation. I have explored aspects of these interests through my work and research positions, including my undergraduate honors thesis titled "The Ecological Implications of Anthropogenic Input in the Miller/Knox and Big Break Regional Shorelines of the East Bay: A Study of Mammalian Species Diversity in the East Bay," which I presented a poster for at the International Urban Wildlife Conference in June 2023. I held a position as an undergraduate research assistant at the Schell Urban Ecology, where I completed my honors thesis and gained experience using Camera Traps, ArcGIS, and R-studio. I've also worked as a lab assistant at the Isacoff Zebrafish Facility, where my responsibilities were focused on maintenance and upkeep of lab equipment. I worked as a lab manager and research assistant at the Berkeley Social Interaction lab under Yang Bai, where we primarily studied emotions and cultural difference. I volunteered with Camp Kesem Berkeley (a non-profit organization providing a week of free summer camp and year-long support to children who has a parent or guardian with cancer) and had the pleasure and privilege of serving as a camp counselor for two years, and a unit leader for one of those years.
