Through my youth development course at ODU I help facilitate a YMCA after-school enrichment program at Larchmont Elementary school in Norfolk, Virginia. Our objective that we strive to achieve each week through this program is to improve the quality of life for the children while they are at school. For many of these children they see this before/after school program as their second home and it is my job as a facilitator to design a program each week with recreational activities that will encourage upstanding values and behaviors. I also serve as a model for these children to follow to make smart, thoughtful choices. In order to participate in this program I was background checked by the YMCA and I also had to complete a childhood neglect and abuse workshop before I was allowed to interact with the children. This is so that I could recognize the signs of abuse and report them appropriately on behalf of the children.
