About Ray Hogan
I'm a natural innovator. I have found that the corporate world has a need for innovation but does not really have a role for innovators. This has led me to being an independent product developer. My two primary motivations for innovation is frustration and waste. When I am frustrated with a product, process or device, I innovate ways to make it work better. When I see something being less efficient that it could be, I generate ideas for improvements. Nine out of ten ideas should die a quick natural death, but one is worth more thinking and of those, a percentage is worth prototyping.I'm currently working on a Google Cloud backed mobile and web application that improves personal safety.I'm also working on a new gardening tool.I have 4 products slated for development in 2021 and 2-3 applications or apps.Multi-discipline problem solving and troubleshooting is a passion.
Listed skills include Business Intelligence, Cognos, Software Development, Business Analysis, and 46 others.

Automation Engineer
CurrentThis multi-discipline project is to add monitoring of Model Railroad trains in order to alert operational staff when there is a derail. A Raspberry Pi and infrared sensors are used to track train regularity and report to an EC2 server. A web page front end shows current train status. The Raspberry Pi and AWS server both use Ubuntu, the database is SQLite, Python and wsgi is used on the Raspberry Pi and AWS server. Nginx is the web server. The web front end uses Bootstrap, and jQuery. The project also includes a decent amount of electronics including circuit design. The project was also suffering from lots of EMI (Electro-magnetic interference) which has been solved using a cocktail of electronic solutions. On this project, I created the idea, architecture, wrote the code, built the circuits, climbed ladders to install sensors, installed the software infrastructure, modeled the Database.... basically everything except some running of wiring. Cause that's what I do.

This project uses NodeJS running on a Ubuntu Netbook to poll Arduinos with Zigbee mesh network devices and triggers sensor data acquisition. Logs the sensor data to a SQLite database for later replication to a web copy of the database. Charting is done with Google Charts. Xbees are run in API mode and power is managed by entering sleep mode. Byte level messaging in hand coded Javascript.

Client Director - Business Intelligence, Analytics And Predictive Analytics
Solutions architect on the presales side. Model customer data, produce proof-of-concepts, develop slide decks and deliver technical presentations to prospective clients. Company was intending to expand to the east coast and changed strategy.Built 10 advanced reports for a Major Bank in Cognos 10.2.2 against OLAP and relational data for regulatory review of Allowance for Credit Loss (ACL) reporting with amounts exceeding $1T. Ideation, architecture and UI design of a Cognos 10 report performance assessment and diagnostics tool.
Sr Infrastructure Software Systems Architect.
Advanced Cognos 10.2 Report development. Custom application creation in .NET (C# and VB.NET), Cognos training. Build significantly complex reports for IT Infrastructure.... Incident, problem and change management. These reports typically were multi-query reports that implemented a complex query strategy. The underlying data was from ServiceNow. The ServiceNow database is an Object-relational design and had several design implementations that produced reporting challenges. Notably was columns with comma separated foreign keys.Netbackup Reporting Portal - Application - Primary developerThis .NET/PERL web application reduced the time to configure a backup from 30 minutes to less than two. Notable also was that the process went from group assisted to self-serve/self diagnostic. The portal did a battery of connectivity and configuration tests for a given host and reported readiness for configuring backups. If all tests passed, the backup was configured under full automation. A UI highlight and my innovation was to perform all tests and present the current state of each in one session. Also gathered application usage information for later application enhancement.ModelingDid relational and OLAP modeling with Framework Manager including aliases, avoiding reporting traps and other modeling challenges. Built cubes using SSAS and Cognos TransformerCognos Training. Trained over 700 Citi employees mostly virtually/hands on in Beginning and Advanced Cognos reporting. Cost savings of greater than $200K. Taught about 40 non-departmental Citi employees in NYC and Tampa the 3-day classes saving that organization $40K vs an IBM quote.Run lunch & learns to greater than 1,000 attendees in ServiceNow reporting.Managed External Vendor relationship for a data feed project.Consult with other groups and external vendors on implementing data feeds into their systems, using a home grown feed mechanism. Write complex custom SQL in support of the feeds.
Business Intelligence Technical Lead
This was a classic consulting company. I was assigned to Coach in NYC. Here I built advanced Cognos Reports and database solutions for product management and distribution. Designed a star schema and worked with offshore developers to create the ETL to report on distribution details from a commercial distribution management system. Enhanced several Cognos Reports with Javascript. The underlying database was an object oriented database. We built an interface that produced an XML output via a web call and Cognos consumed the XML file as a source.Managed 2 Junior Cognos Developers and guided offshore team to fulfill requirements.Interviewed technical candidates (including a few fraudulent ones) .Working with XML in Cognos had one significant challenge ... investigating the queried data. When troubleshooting report problems, one often runs SQL queries against the underlying database to determine if the problem is in the report or the data. Doing this was impossible because the underlying Database was Object oriented. To solve this problem, I built a tool to parse the XML and insert the rows into an Oracle database so SQL could be run on the same data consumed by the report.
Cognos Technical Trainer
Taught customer facing hands on classes in all aspects of Cognos Business Intelligence tools. Beginning and advanced reporting, beginning and advanced modeling, OLAP cube creation, Server Maintenance. Highly rated instructor. My core skill is in not teaching from the book but instead teaching what you should do with Cognos, not what you can do (as the manuals often did). Beyond my official duties and self-initiated, I conceived built several process improvement systems related to training. Training Manual Inventory Management System (Web based - PHP ,SQL Server)I noticed that most had a significant inventory of unused and dated training manuals. The idea for this system came about when I saw an admin discarding hundreds of dated manuals to clear space in the training room. So I built a PHP based web application where individual offices could maintain their inventory of manuals per class and central admin could check the inventory before sending manuals to cover a particular class at a particular location. $25+ per manual and 25 training locations was the spark I needed to conceptualize the application. This system saved approximately $50,000 per year in printing, shipping and waste. Particularly costly manuals included on demand printing at Kinkos and cross border overnight shipping. All eliminated.Unified Certificate Printing. All Certificate printing was done locally after the class. Here again, a process problem. I noticed that different offices used different names of classes, had alignment problems, used different fonts and sizes etc. Sometimes there were alignment problems. Basically unprofessional. So I conceived and built a web-based system that allowed admins to past in a list of attendees and pick a class, and the code would essentially mail-merge the data into a rendered PDF for consistent look and feel. One interesting part of the system invoked font size reduction for exceptionally long student names.
