My company provides invoice finance to solve cash flow problems for small to medium sized businesses, with reliable but slow paying debtors, that can’t get enough help from their bank. My career evolved out of two decades in investment banking where I set up securitisation structures to raise mortgage and other funds in the global capital markets for Australian banks, non-bank institutions and others.Disillusioned with that in the aftermath of the GFC I looked to get into grass roots business finance that was more personal. Surprisingly what I found were SMEs, desperate for funding, being rejected because they did not have: • a long enough track record; • collateral or enough equity in property; • a squeaky clean credit history; or • they had overdue ATO obligations.Ironically, with lending criteria toughening, SMEs need for working capital was growing. Customers were stretching payments terms to 60 days or more and their suppliers were insisting on prompt payment - they were caught in a cash squeeze.Then, in 2011, I discovered FIFO Capital whose Australasian-wide network offered a simple, flexible and unique working capital solution - filling the void in SME finance.This suited me as I have a deep appreciation of the cash flow cycle and how to manage it - whether the priority is survival, optimising the funding mix or leveraging growth opportunities.My approach is first and foremost about the needs of the client - pragmatic and focused on a solution that is "right" for them.
