Director, Park Center For Indepedent MediaIthaca College Aug 2018 - Aug 2024Ithaca, Ny, UsThe Park Center for Independent Media (PCIM), launched in 2008, is a center for the study of journalism-oriented media outlets that create and distribute content outside traditional corporate systems and news organizations. The Center examines the impact of independent media on journalism, democracy, society, and participatory cultures. The US independent media sector is growing in response to concentration of media ownership, the emergence of conglomerates, and corporate constraints on journalism. In order to address multiple economic, environmental, political, and social crises, it is critical to protect a free, independent, and viable media system outside the corporatized mainstream journalism sectors. The highest principles of the First Amendment of the United States and a democracy based on the free exercise of an informed citizenry are of paramount and urgent importance in the current era.The Center’s mission is to engage media producers and students in dialogue and action about independent media, especially US-based outlets producing content (across single- or multiple-content platforms) on issues such as equity, social justice, and sustainability. -

Gallatin Global FacultyNew York University Jan 2016 - Jun 2016New York, Ny, UsTeaching "Writing Dissent in the Age of Mass Media"Course Description: South Asian region has been home to numerous literary and political movements that challenge the state and orthodox forces such as organized religion and rigid social hierarchies. Furthermore, freedom of expression in the region has been variously understood as a “Western” value and a fundamental human right. How do writers, activists, journalists and artists struggle with freedom of expression within their own societies while navigating such global discourses? This course examines the art and practice of writing dissenting views – fiction, non-fiction and digital media - and journalistic reporting on areas that are considered as taboo subjects. The issue of dissent has also been compounded by the overwhelming nature of mass media that amplifies as well distorts the nature of dissenting voices. Through the close study of written texts, audio-visual material, and new media products, students would be introduced to the processes, perils and impact of ‘dissent’. Debates on freedom of expression and its manifestation within different national traditions in the South Asian region will also be discussed in the class. Specific topics include: writing on religious themes in times of blasphemy, the changing nature of activism for human rights and freedom of expression in South Asia; and the emergence of new media tools such as blogging and Facebook as avenues of dissent. Students will also examine how media can serve (deliberately or unwittingly) to build (or undermine) a freedom of expression culture, expose abuses of freedom of speech, become victims in struggles for freedom of expression, or facilitate those very violations_Participation in Gallatin South Asia Conference_Panel discussant in Gallatin events -
