Little did I know that when I signed up for an oceanography class in high school, that it would ultimately lead to a 28-year career with the largest construction and engineering company in the United States.While studying chemistry at the University of California at Davis, I was working as an undergraduate research assistant in the environmental toxicology department. During that time, I conducted my first environmental study demonstrating that sunlight and a catalyst could decompose pesticides in rice field water. I was hooked.After graduating with my Ph.D., I joined Bechtel as a staff scientist and have advanced up the ranks to a Principal Environmental Scientist. Throughout the course of my career, I have had the opportunity to support corporate environmental initiatives related to sustainable design, global warming mitigation, and work process improvements. In 2009, I received a grant for $25,000 to study greenhouse gas emission inventories, which led to the judgement that the Global Reporting Initiative’s protocol was the most suitable for use.In 2017, I was recognized as a Bechtel Distinguished Scientist for making exceptional contributions to the organization.I have had the privilege to author three Bechtel Design Guides that lay the foundation for implementing groundbreaking techniques and methodologies to support Bechtel projects.
