About Richard Bradshaw
I am a geoscientist with more than 10 years of experience turning raw data into insights. I collect, process, and analyze data to answer complex questions. I also develop scripts to automate certain quality control tasks to quickly assess data quality.Once while I was analyzing research samples there was an equipment malfunction, which rendered two days of important data unusable. There were no quality control measures in place for that equipment due to the cumbersome manual data processing that was required for it. I have since developed a Python script that automates the data processing of standard reference material analyses, allowing users to analyze a set of standards, then quickly process the data and visualize the data quality prior to analyzing their research samples. We now use this procedure daily to ensure that the data we collect is accurate and precise. In my current position, I manage >$1M of scientific equipment. I collaborate with research PI’s (senior management) on lab finances, maintenance, growth, and outcomes. I also schedule and train users (customers) on the use of lab equipment and associated data processing, quality control, and interpretation. This requires me to effectively communicate with customers to understand their analytical needs and design lab and data analysis methods to give them the best chance for success. As a PhD student researcher, I managed and completed three research projects in 4 years. I developed scripts and software to interactively model chemical diffusion using finite difference modeling. I also led a data analytical study where I developed MATLAB scripts to create synthetic chemical datasets, then automatically perform diffusion modeling and calculate statistics to assess the accuracy and precision of diffusion modeling. This resulted in a peer-reviewed publication with a simple formula for researchers to easily calculate the limits of diffusion modeling for their situations, and has been cited >20 times.

Lab Manager
I manage all the geochemical analytical facilities and related sample preparation labs for the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. I oversee all of the use, training, scheduling, maintenance, and repairs of six major analytical instruments. I ensure that the data generated by these analytical instruments is accurate by implementing quality control measures. This is done through automated quality control scripts I have written in Python and R. These scripts quickly compare daily quality control standard analyses with previous analyses and accepted values to allow users to see if the current analyses are within acceptable limits.I have also expanded on the in-house data processing software for LA-ICP-MS data originally developed by Adam Kent in Visual Basic, and later partially written in MATLAB. I took the MATLAB code that was written for a very specific application, and generalized it to work with all the common types of laser ablation data (spots, line of spots, linescans).Analytical instruments I manage:• Teledyne Cetac Photon Machines Analyte laser ablation system• Thermo Scientific iCAP Q quadrupole inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS)• Thermo Delta V Plus isotope ratio mass spectrometer (IRMS) with a GasBench II, Conflo IV, and Flash elemental analyzer• Picarro L2130i Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy (CRDS) analyzer• Tescan Vega 3 environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)• North Star Imaging iMagiX X-ray Computed Tomography (XCT) system
Phd Researcher
Led all aspects of two research projects focussing on magma storage beneath volcanoes. I analyzed samples from 20+ different volcanoes, generating thousands of individual chemical analyses by laser ablation ICP-MS. I managed the quality control, processing, and analysis of all data collected. I led a data analytical study from the initial idea through model development to final publication. This study quantifies the limits of modeling chemical diffusion using Monte Carlo simulations in MATLAB.
Teaching Assistant And Instructor
I assisted students in both lab and classroom settings. In most classes, I taught lab sections, including writing and administering tests and quizzes, and grading labs and assignments. I also taught the summer Geology 101 "The Solid Earth" course as the sole instructor. This included lectures four days a week and two lab sessions per week. I wrote and graded homework assignments, quizzes and exams. I also administered and assisted students in lab assignments.
Laser Ablation Icp-Ms Lab Assistant
I Trained and assisted users in the operation, calibration and data processing for both trace elements and isotopic analysis by Laser Ablation-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometer. I also assisted in the maintenance and repair of the instruments.
Teaching Assistant
I assisted students in the lab, classroom and in the field. This included guest lecturing, supervising lab sessions and grading exams, labs and assignments.
Exploration Geology Intern
I was a summer intern where I did soil pH testing and rock sampling for evidence of blind ore deposits.
Research Assistant
Undergraduate mentored research project: U/Pb geochronology of the Salt Wash Member of the Morrison Formation near Capitol Reef National Park, UtahField assistant for MS student performing geologic mapping
