FMC Technologies develops and deploys large mechanical and electrical systems used for deepsea crude oil extraction. My role involved primarily designing and testing of the network infrastructure that supported topside (oil rigs or vessels) to subsea communications of various oil fields.. The topside network consisted of Cisco ME3400, IE3000 and 3560 L2-3 switches. Fiber and/or powerline links through the umbilical cable enabled communication to sensors and instrumentation located on Manifolds, XTs and wells. Subsea routers and powerline modems handled subsea communications to topside equipment as well as switching for local nodes and redundant paths. Typical protocols and technologies used in subsea networks were OSPF, RSTP, HSRP, QoS, Powerline, etc. Support throughout the implementation cycle was also provides until EFAT e commissioning stage.
