About Rachel Bryant
I chose a career in the field of architecture because it is science-based, presents me with varied and changing problems to be solved, and it has the potential to enrich lives. In 3rd grade I wanted to be the next Steve Irwin, and until 9th grade I considered veterinary medicine. I fell in love with architecture in history class and studying the Classical world in Latin class and Greek language club. My love for nature has never waned; I look for opportunities to bring humans and our built environments closer to nature through biophilia and sustainable strategies, including my involvement in several LEED certified projects. I have enjoyed working with the programmatic complexity of K-12 schools and university learning spaces. The saying may be "it takes a village to raise a child," but it takes a dedicated project team to make the best learning environments a reality. I try to learn something new with each project, and the best teachers I have had are projects like laboratories and research facilities that demand interdisciplinary integration with other engineering fields and the processes of the staff themselves. In those cases, the customers are the staff that will use the facility. Projects like retail spaces have to rely on market research and speculation to create the most desirable experiences for future customers. I have given a similar type of research and speculation towards providing future-proof corporate offices. None of these projects would be completed without an available budget, along with the care and attention that it requires to stay under it but still create good architecture. In my 10 years of experience, I have found that my favorite projects are the ones where the design team and the client stakeholders engaged in collaborative problem-seeking to arrive at the architectural solution. They require careful communication and agreed-upon milestones, but at the project wrap everyone smiles, laughs, and has a few good stories to tell.
Listed skills include Revit, Autocad, Sketchup, Indesign, and 45 others.

Sustainability Coordinator
Portfolio Analyst Architect
This role is a continuation of my employment after Dow Dupont Pioneer split up and launched all previous agricultural business components into a new stand-alone company. As an in-house corporate architect, I created architectural drawings for office lease spaces, new and renovated laboratory facilities, and machine and farm implement maintenance and storage facilities across the globe. I created and maintained the company-wide office facility guidelines, which outlined the typical types and numbers of workstations and support spaces like meeting rooms based on head count and predicted in-office attendance. The typical project workflow involved creating plans using both the office guidelines and input from the site employees and regional leadership. The internal security and IT teams would then be engaged to help produce a drawing set in a detail level similar to the design development industry standard, before being sent out-of-house to a local project team. Projects on the Johnston campus are completed in a more design-build workflow with the contractors on retainer.
Architect
Please note: I did not leave this job - the end date reflects the creation of Corteva Agriscience as a stand-alone company at the split of Dow Dupont Pioneer. As an in-house corporate architect, I created architectural drawings for office lease spaces, new and renovated laboratory facilities, and machine and farm implement maintenance and storage facilities across the globe. The typical project workflow involved creating plans using both the office guidelines and input from the site employees and regional leadership. Shortly after I started, the Johnston facilities team was discussing potential accessibility issues in the campus buildings. I proposed performing an audit, which was approved. I created a checklist to help document the existing conditions in break rooms, restrooms, entrance vestibules, primary sidewalks, and drinking fountains. I collected data and recorded it on checklists pertaining to each individual building by level. I then created 2D and 3D basic visualizations demonstrating the ADA and ICC 117.1 Standards that were applicable. The visualizations helped my manager present to leadership and secure funding for the renovation projects.
Intern Architect
During my time at GTG, they were a small design-build firm with a practicing owner licensed in both architecture and structural engineering, another licensed architect, myself working toward licensure, a draftsperson, a contract manager, an estimator, and a small team of construction laborers. Many clients hired the firm as both the designers and the GC. My duties included surveying existing conditions, meeting with clients to create a program, producing drawings in both CAD and Revit from conceptual designs through construction documents, creating 3D visuals, writing specifications, choosing interior finishes, performing construction inspections, conducting meetings with clients, note-taking and meeting minute writing, reviewing expense reports and change orders, and conducting final walk-throughs. Our clients included K-12 schools, Drake University, Valley West Mall, a custom auto body shop and showroom, and The Baker Group corporate offices and manufacturing facility in Ankeny.
Intern Architect
My employment at Design Alliance was prior to its acquisition by The Farnsworth Group. As an architect seeking licensure, I assisted on projects starting with programming and conceptual design through construction documents. I created specifications and reviewed construction submittals. I also surveyed existing site conditions. Projects I was involved in include K-12 schools, universities, public service buildings, and small offices.During my time there, the firm met as a whole every Monday morning to go over workloads, requests for help, and upcoming or potential projects. As a young architect, I felt the atmosphere of collaboration and the mentorship I was given were very helpful in growing my skills and learning.
Intern Architect
The firm principals Brad Wright and Eric Miller were my first mentors after college while I began working towards licensure. I was involved in projects starting with programming and conceptual design through construction documents. I helped draft specifications and review construction submittals. I also surveyed existing site conditions. Projects I was involved in include K-12 schools, churches, universities, public service buildings, and various commercial offices.
