Ricardo “Ric” C. Alindayu II is a chemical engineer with a career focused on the circular economy and marine plastic pollution in the Philippines. Presently he works as a Project Analyst for the EU-PH Partnership for the Green Economy (EU-GEPP) Green LGUs Project at UNDP Philippines.He formerly served as the main research associate for PlastiCount Pilipinas under the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute (UP MSI). He has developed the web portal (https://plasticount.ph/) for knowledge sharing, and has trained government and university researchers in plastic pollution baselining methods. Prior to his stint at the UP MSI, he co-founded Cloop in 2019, a social enterprise that builds micro-recycling facilities for underserved communities in the Philippines, with sites in Pasig City, Island Garden City of Samal (Davao del Norte), and San Isidro (Davao Oriental) supported by the Humanitarian Engineering, Entrepreneurship, and Design (HEED) group at the University of the Philippines, Lehigh University, Climathon Philippines, UNDP Philippines, and WWF Philippines. He is also a Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Academic Fellow for Social Entrepreneurship and Economic Development at the University of Connecticut sponsored by the US Department of State. Last September 2023, he was selected as one of seven Ocean Youth Leaders of the Ocean Policy Research Institute (Sasakawa Peace Foundation) and the Peace Boat. As an engineer by profession, his technical expertise and research interests include development of baselining methods for marine plastics pollution (micro and macro-plastics), design and management of ocean data web platforms, and vessel & drone routing in marine environments.
