About Riccardo Maggiore
I hold a Ph.D. from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (NL), completed in collaboration with Nikhef (Amsterdam, NL) and the University of Birmingham (UK).My research focused on laser interferometry for high-precision metrology. I have developed and delivered optical designs and hardware for the gravitational waves interfero- metric detectors Virgo, LIGO, and Einstein Telescope interferometers. As a core member of the development team for the leading simulation tool in optical modeling for gravitational wave interferometry, I specialise in leveraging advanced numerical simulations to diagnose detector malfunctions and connect them to underlying physical phenomena, driving improvements in system performance and understanding.

Postdoctoral Researcher
CurrentI lead the scientific direction of the Numerical Simulations Group, focusing on advancing laser interferometry measurements.I am the manager of the Low-Frequency Control Work-Package for the European Einstein Telescope Project.I am a member of the Development Team for Finesse, the leading Python tool for optical simulations in gravitational wave detector research.
Phd Of Physics
I completed my PhD in Physics at Nikhef, in collaboration with VU University Amsterdam and the University of Birmingham. My research focused on advancing laser-interferometric precision measurements using numerical simulations. The primary tool I used for these simulations was Finesse, a Python-based tool for which I am part of the development team.Specifically, my research developed a control strategy for strongly coupled optical cavities, a system previously considered uncontrollable.Additionally, my work revealed a fundamental limit in the Pound–Drever–Hall technique, the most widely used method in optical interferometry for stabilizing laser frequency.I also developed a detailed model of the radiation pressure effect on the complex opto-mechanical systems of gravitational wave detectors. This model is now becoming crucial in the design of suspension systems for third-generation detectors.Furthermore, I participated on-site to the commissioning of the Advanced Virgo detector.
Phd Of Physics + Astronomy Ft
I spent the first two years of my PhD at the University of Birmingham and approximately one year as a visiting researcher at the European Gravitational Observatory in Cascina (PI), Italy. My project initially focused on experimental work in the laboratory, where I aimed to build a system of strongly coupled optical cavities in combination with a micro-mechanical resonator. This optomechanical system was intended to serve as the foundation for a phase-correcting, quantum phase-insensitive filter.Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the project was concluded earlier than planned. Nevertheless, I gained valuable experience in setting up an optical bench and performing optical measurements. Additionally, my work resulted in the formulation of a control strategy for strongly coupled cavities, which is detailed in the following publication: PhysRevD.109.022010.
Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships - Ligo Surf Program
My work involved detailed computational modeling and analysis to understand the dislocation dynamics and their impact on the material properties of maraging steel blades. This position was highly competitive, with only four spots available across all universities in Italy.
