Pacific Energy Institute is addressing the need for independent, informed and balanced perspective on the complex issues related to a more distributed electric system. Envisioned, led, and grew Shell’s Energy Platform, including designing, developing, and delivering the digital and AI platform underpinning Shell’s global power and clean energy business. I oversaw and led all software engineering, data science/ML/AI, optimization engineering, data engineering, platform engineering, economics, analytics, strategy, product management, commercialization, business development, and solution delivery efforts.

Led AMS’s product and engineering efforts, including managing product vision, strategy, incubation, product management, software engineering, data science, electricity market participation, product marketing, and go-to-market planning. Strategically transitioned the company away from its utility-centric, non-wires alternative asset deployment business model and towards a software-centric business model. Incubated, led, and grew the development and commercial rollout of a new algorithmic trading platform to serve as the centerpiece of this new business strategy. This algorithmic trading platform and business were successfully sold to Fluence in October 2020 and now serve as the backbone of Fluence’s asset optimization platform and services (Fluence Mosaic).

Incubated, led, and grew Tesla's Grid Services business, which seeks to grow and monetize the flexibility of Tesla's fleet of energy assets under management. Initiated and led development of Tesla's algorithmic trading platform (Tesla AutoBidder) and systematic trading strategies, including in support of Hornsdale Power Reserve, at the time the largest battery storage project in the world (100MW/129MWh). Led Tesla's first-of-it’s-kind aggregated battery and Virtual Power Plant (VPP) partnership with Green Mountain Power (GMP), which leveraged Tesla's VPP and AutoBidder algorithmic trading platforms to orchestrate thousands of behind-the-meter batteries deployed at GMP customer sites. Led Tesla's Energy Product Economics, Energy Optimization, Grid Service Product Management, Grid Services Solution Delivery, and Energy Technical Policy teams.

Led SolarCity's efforts to leverage distributed energy resources (DERs) - including solar, batteries, controllable loads, smart inverters and microgrids - to benefit the electric grid and its customers. Conceived, incubated, and led SolarCity's Grid Services business to utilize portfolios of aggregated DERs to provide grid services to utilities, grid operators, and wholesale markets. Collaborated with utilities, regulators, vendors, national research laboratories, and other industry stakeholders to leverage distributed energy resources to support next-generation grid design and operations. Managed SolarCity's Power Systems Engineering, Grid Services, Grid Economics, Market Integration, and Technical Policy teams.

Managed emerging technologies roadmap and deployment projects related to PG&E's electric distribution technology portfolio. Managed $85M project deployment portfolio, including three multi-year smart grid pilots: VoltVAR Optimization, Line Sensors, and Fault Location. Served as product lead for the design and rollout of PG&E's data historian software platform for distribution SCADA devices (OSIsoft's PI platform), data integration and reporting platform (ABB’s FocalPoint), and real-time grid analytics and visualization platform (BitStew). Managed PG&E's distribution software demonstration and testing lab, which serves as the testing ground for smart grid technologies. Also engaged heavily in development of strategic and technology roadmaps for distributed generation, demand response, distribution management system (DMS), distributed energy resource management system (DERMS), SCADA, distribution automation, smart meters for operations, energy storage, and big data analytics.

Managed strategic projects within electric operations. Developed patented model to quantitatively forecast grid infrastructure damage and associated restoration times for major grid outage events. Led effort to revamp company-wide restoration operational response to large-scale storms and disasters. Emergency management officer leading planning and intelligence unit of PG&E’s Emergency Operations Center.

Founded startup that developed sensors that predict faults in underground electric utility cables, enabling repair of cables before faults occur. Received California Energy Commission's Energy Innovations Small Grant (EISG) to spin out technology from UC Berkeley research and into a company. Eventually shut down company and returned funding after deciding growth prospects were insufficient to support desired impact.

Supported strategic consulting engagements relating to international market expansions, internal operations improvement, mergers and acquisitions, merger integrations, and supplier negotiation strategies.

Motivated by the loss of my dad to cancer, I founded 4K for Cancer, a non-profit that organized endurance athletic events supporting young adults with cancer. Our marquee event was a summer-long, cross-country bicycle trek ridden by groups of college students. I organized and rode the inaugural trek as a college student in 2002, and continued to lead the organization for 8 years thereafter. 4K for Cancer shut down in 2024 after operating for over 20 years. Since its inception, 4K raised $8M to provide essential resources to young adults with cancer including fertility preservation, housing during treatment, and various social services as they navigated their diagnoses and treatments. 2,400 college students from 200 colleges dedicated their summers to cycling across the country, riding over 3 million miles. Their dedication and passion made a difference in the lives of many.
