About Rc Johnson
As a senior engineering leader, I enjoy creating effective, world-class engineering teams empowered to solve big problems. I give my team autonomy in how they solve problems, allowing them to help guide us in the “how” while staying focused on the overall vision. After more than ten years in startups and 20 years in the tech industry, it has become critical for me to guide teams to deliver solutions quickly and with the flexibility to find the initial solution by following our users into a complete application. The key is that engineering teams have to provide impact or value. Aligning with the product management and executive team on the most important work is critical. My teams have done this repeatedly, creating 100’s of millions of dollars of new revenue, bringing many new users to the platform, and opening up billion-dollar new lines of business.I pride myself on being able to recruit top engineers to join me in my endeavors to build software that benefits everyone who uses it. I have grown small teams at WP Engine, Bazaarvoice, and Indeed.com to large, productive powerhouses that are creating new value far beyond the cost of the group. I also delight in the individual growth of my team members as they progress in their careers. As an Engineering leader, I establish the vision for new ways of working. At Indeed.com, we created an internal venture capital system that allowed us to rapidly explore new product innovation in a cost-sensitive and time-efficient manner. We launched over a dozen new products from our Incubator into the broader Indeed.com ecosystem, and many of those projects are the backbone of the successes Indeed sees today. While at Bazaarvoice, I led the team to build the first genuinely software-as-a-service application. In doing so, we took the revenue from that product and expanded it 20X to hundreds of millions of dollars.Ultimately, the goal of all of this is to make the world a better place. Whether that’s helping engineers, consumers, businesses, homeowners, job seekers, employers, or some other group, I’m excited when we’re participating in social good. I’ve led B2B, B2C, SaaS, Support, and practically every other type of engineering team out there, and when you get that mission right, it makes all the difference.

Senior Director Of Engineering | Indeed Incubator (Agile New Product Innovation)
As a Sr. Director of Engineering I was responsible for leading not just the entire Incubator Engineering team (10+ projects simultaneously, 80+ developers) but also influencing the product selection process and driving systematic changes across the 4000-person Engineering organization. I coordinated with our SRE, Data Science, Product, UX, Legal, and other teams, ensuring the Incubator program was successful, providing feedback on processes, and responding to their needs. One of our most significant accomplishments was the Virtual Interviews Platform (VIP), kicking off in March 2020. Six weeks later, the first production video interview occurred, and VIP had integrated into the Indeed ecosystem. By the end of 2022, VIP had hosted over eight million quality interviews (interviews where the job seeker and employer connected for an actual interview.) We quickly grew the team from the initial seven to over 40 engineers, QA engineers, and managers across multiple teams before handing it off to a core team to continue its scale.Along with VIP, we had several other significant projects in this same timeframe. We successfully grew a configurable platform of automated assessments to screen job seekers before interviews. We created dozens of assessment modules, selected several external vendors for additional evaluations, and had hundreds of employers using it to scale their hiring (saving them significant time and energy.) The team also successfully transitioned Text2Apply (10 thousand+ SMS-based applies), Universal Resume (Japanese resume creator - #1 Japanese resume creator app), and more to core teams during this time.I was one of the top interviewers (hundreds of interviews completed) and trained many interviewers. I supported the career growth of my team, promoted principal engineers and directors, and mentored leaders in other disciplines. Finally, I was the executive sponsor for the Code2College program, bringing in multiple high school interns every summer.
Engineering Director | Indeed Incubator (New Product Innovation)
I grew the Incubator team to 50+ software engineers, managers, and QA, even as we exited projects and teams to other parts of the business. We leveraged 4-6 contractors to support UI improvements and Accessibility across our 10+ early-stage products giving them significant speed improvements in delivering accessible and polished products.I led the delivery of Indeed Hiring Events which drove significant new revenue ($100+ million in revenue by 2022 and hundreds of hires). This became a foundational element of the new Indeed Hiring Platform (IHP, or pay per hire.) I also coached the team building Virtual Interviews, which delivered more than 500,000 interviews in its first year and the second leg of IHP.During COVID-19, we launched 12+ new teams in two weeks to help people get jobs. This included products like the Virtual Interviews Platform, Unemployment Assistant, and early automated matching of job seekers.I was a champion for the career growth of engineers and managers across the career ladder (Software Engineer to Principal Engineer and Engineering Manager to Director of Engineering).Beyond the Incubator team, I revamped the Indeed performance management process to unify all Product, Engineering, Operations, and Strategy roles across Indeed on one performance management system (reducing 20+ workflows to one and affecting ~4,000 employees.) I was a crucial leader in the change management program rolling out these changes and a spokesperson for the 2000-person Engineering organization. I trained leaders across the organization on the new process, answered questions about the benefits and challenges, and helped write the core of the documentation. I also created a program training the 2000-person engineering organization about the Indeed compensation philosophy. I wrote a three-part blog post series read by hundreds of engineers and a mandatory video/computer-based training series for every manager and above within the organization.
Senior Manager | Indeed Incubator (Co-Founder, New Product Innovation)
Coming in to lead the Labs engineering team of four engineers, I partnered with the head of product for the Labs team and we rewrote the charter to focus exclusively on new product innovation. We created an internal venture capital system that, over the next 6+ years, would test 60+ new product ideas and grow 15 of them to significantly positive enough results to "exit" into other parts of the Indeed engineering team. From that initial four engineers, I grew the team to over 40 in Austin, Seattle, and Tokyo and 10+ projects running simultaneously. Eventually, we created $150M+ in new revenue, millions of interactions with job seekers, and many other positive outcomes for Indeed's key metrics. I created a transition plan for legacy Labs projects, moved them to other internally facing teams, and shut down many others to reduce the maintenance burden on the team. I also managed the Indeed Prime team for six months helping improve the software development lifecycle and making incremental improvements in the architecture of the platform to enable faster smaller releases. I worked with the software engineers on the Incubator team to grow in their careers, promoting several to more senior engineering roles, and promoting several to engineering managers. I was also the first manager for the Code2College high school intern program, coaching two high school interns in their first summer of professional development. I oversaw this program from its first year of partnership and became the executive sponsor for the relationship with Code2College through 2023.Beyond my immediate teams, I was also responsible for running semi-annual hackathons for hundreds of engineers, the university recruiting program alongside my talent acquisition partners where we hired 70+ full-time and interns, interviewing many new engineers considering Indeed, and making numerous operational improvements to recruiting, hiring, onboarding, performance management, promotion, and many other processes.
Director Of Engineering | Web, Mobile, And Data
I created a Data Lake (using Amazon Redshift BI database) aggregating our production MySQL database information, Stripe, Salesforce, Zendesk, Mixpanel, and Google Analytics data into one location for easy business-wide analysis. Additionally, I researched and proposed the visualization vendor allowing leadership at LawnStarter to view BI data from across the organization.Hired three front-end engineers and created the front-end Angular team and drove improvements in the build and deployment of the applications to increase page speed and reliability. I improved the build and testing processes, moving from Pivotal to Jira and creating a more repeatable testing process for the web, Andriod, and iOS applications.I established the product management processes, working with leadership to develop the roadmap and prioritizing features against company-wide OKRs. I instituted performance management principles in Engineering, expanding the skill sets of each of the Engineering team members.I improved interviewing process to create a high-quality candidate experience. Additionally, I oversaw the expansion of the wired and wireless networks across two additional floors, allowing for the expansion of the sales and support teams during the Spring by 20+ new hires.

Programmer/Analyst Iii
As a Programmer/Analyst III at National Instruments, I was responsible for designing and implementing large-scale web applications in support of the e-commerce, marketing, and support teams. I was an evangelist for the new solution I had created and helped champion its use across the company to great success. Additionally, I was very involved in the training and development of programmers at all skill levels throughout the National Instruments IT organization.
Programmer/Analyst Ii
My role as Programmer/Analyst II involved building many backend systems to support the documentation and metadata projects as a part of the IT team.
