The isolated nature of the power system in Ireland provides challenges to the integration of large penetrations of wind power, necessary to meet renewable energy and carbon emissions targets. High penetrations of wind can undermine system stability, particularly at times of low load. At certain times, the power system is unable to accommodate high penetrations of wind power and so some is lost to curtailment. We investigated ways of encouraging electricity demand during periods of high wind, and discouraging load during low-wind events in order to mitigate curtailment and reduce system costs. We investigated the effect of wind generation on wholesale electricity prices, and developed a form of market-driven Demand Side Management, where a consumer would pay a real-time variant of the market price for electricity and would thus react to system changes as they happen. This was found to increase the utilisation of wind generation and reduce curtailment, particularly due to the relationship between market price and wind generation. System operating costs were reduced, along with the water utility’s electricity expenses
