It Manager - Infrastructure And Data Management
CurrentThis role encompasses responsibility for all areas of IT except Application Development; I have strategic accountability for Enterprise Architecture, Security (both IT and physical), IT Infrastructure and Telecommunications, Data Management, EDI, Tech Support, and Endpoint Management. I also direct a customer-facing “business liaison” team, Partner Integration.Recent major initiatives completed in this role include a major datacenter modernization project (traditional infrastructure migrated to Nutanix HCI), and a migration of a traditional on-prem phone, conferencing, and call center to cloud-based RingCentral. Another notable recent success was the implementation of a new IT Service Management platform with which to consolidate ITIL based practices. Facilitated conversion to 100% remote workforce, which was completed within one week of the Wisconsin COVID-19 “Safer at Home” pandemic order, where prior to the order. We are currently evolving into several facets of software-defined data center, hardening our security by increasing network segmentation granularity. We are also developing an architectural roadmap to judiciously leverage mostly Azure-based cloud services. In time, this architectural foundation will enable more fully-realized DevOps practices for our Software Engineering teams. We are also preparing for a major core application transformation. In support of this transformation, I am accountable for ensuring that we are providing a stable, secure, and scalable (hybrid) infrastructure upon which to develop and host the new application. I am also charged with developing and coordinating a data management strategy, to include the introduction of data governance / business stewardship, standardized data access methodology, improved records management and regulatory compliance capabilities, enhanced role based access controls, and new business analytic capabilities.
It Director - Infrastructure And Operations
My role at MG&E expanded to encompass directional authority and budgetary accountability for all MG&E data centers, WAN, XaaS, and Unified Communications. My teams implemented a major data center consolidation and modernization, which included the introduction of HCI infrastructure, a Software Defined Network strategy, and (where appropriate) the migration of workloads and infrastructure to Azure XaaS. This infrastructure modernization was necessary to provide a technical foundation (Big Data, IoT, etc.) to support strategic green energy and grid modernization programs. I also contributed ITIL expertise to the deployment of MG&E's new Service Management solution, and remained on a steering committee participant for the rollout of DevOps.
It Manager - Infrastructure And Data Management
In this position I was responsible for providing management and direction to IT Infrastructure (Server and Network) and Data Management/Business Intelligence teams. This position represented my first career opportunity to manage the Data Management function. I was charged with constructing a multi-year Data Management strategy, which sought to formalize the organization's data modeling processes and establish data governance and stewardship (collaborating across both IT and the business). It also included a data architecture roadmap to standardize data access, introduce data virtualization, and develop bifurcation of data between operational and analytical data stores. I worked with business stakeholders to co-develop Business Intelligence and data visualization capabilities. Before I was promoted to my next position, I also had an opportunity to begin preliminary planning for the development of a DevOps environment/practice as a piece of a much broader portfolio of IT modernization projects. As part of the promotion to my next role, I have had to defer the completion of that activity to another teammate. However, I gained a great deal of valuable knowledge during the part of that journey I was responsible for, and enjoyed the opportunity to dig a little bit back into some of my prior Application Development management experience.
Vice President - It Infrastructure, Security, And Service Desk
During my time at AnchorBank (now Old National Bank) I was responsible for providing management and direction to the IT Infrastructure, Security, and Service Desk teams. I was accountable for all aspects of primary and co-location (DR) data centers, IT Security, Technical Support, LAN/WAN, telephony, desktop, and mobile technology for the corporate HQ and 50+ branches across Wisconsin.Project experience included the implementation of WAN redundancy to improve branch up-time, coordinating migration to more cost-effective and stable WAN and telephony carriers, implementing and testing capability improvements to the bank's Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery plans, and coordinating external security penetration testing for ongoing security and regulatory compliance of the bank's infrastructure. I also worked toward maturing the IT Service Management (ITIL) processes in order to enhance the bank's overall efficiency and customer service, as well as to better respond to regulatory compliance around, in particular, Change Management. Thanks to my many years of experience in the Health Insurance sector, IT Security and regulatory compliance was not unfamiliar to me. However, this position did mark the first time that I had formal accountability and oversight of those functions. This was, by far, the most exciting challenge for me at Anchor. To help me mature mature into that aspect of my career, I was extremely fortunate to have an experienced supervisor and mentor (CTO), as well as a well-respected and technically formidable security team (WireSafe) supporting me.
It Manager - Quality Control/Itil
At Dean Health Plan (now a division of Medica), I provided direction and oversight for a team of Process Engineers and dedicated technical staff responsible for the design, implementation, and governance of the organization's ITIL-based IT Service Management Framework, the tools and technology which facilitated it, and organizational KPI productivity metrics.I also participated to the implementation of their TIBCO SOA solution, and was a member of their Enterprise Architecture committee.I kicked off and participated in a major service management platform migration (from FrontRange ITSM to ServiceNow). Although I ultimately left Dean to take advantage of a great opportunity with my next employer before this project was completed, I still managed to see this very exciting project through most of it's detailed requirement gathering stages, including the pre-loading of CI's into the CMDB.
It Infrastructure And Support Director
I began my career at WEA as a Programmer/Analyst II. One year later I was promoted to co-manage the legacy (RPG) and Java Application Development teams. I was again promoted three years later to the position of IT Infrastructure and Support Director. I served in the latter role for about seven years.Teams reporting to me during my tenure (at one time or another) as Director included IT Infrastructure (Server, Network, and Telecommunications), Enterprise Architecture, Deployment Coordination (Environment Management), EDI Operations, IT Service Desk, and Mid-Range Computer Operations. I was responsible for planning and managing the bulk of WEA's IT Capital and Operational budget. I sat on multiple project steering committees, worked closely with the IT Security Officer and the Regulatory Compliance department, managed the IT Technology Roadmap, and coordinated the IT Initiatives Portfolio.
Programmer/Analyst Ii
Despite my short tenure there, I owe the bulk of my growth as an Application Developer to my experience at Chorus. While there, I worked extensively on their IBM Integrated Customer Management System (ICMS) telecom product. My primary project was to project manage, design, construct, test, and deploy a comprehensive e-911 solution to address the (then-new) Local Number Portability (LNP) regulations. The project involved coordinating closely with many 3rd party vendor, municipal, and federal organizations. The solution I developed was deployed at the corporate HQ territory (Middleton and West Madison), as well as to a sister company located in Winona, MN.
It Consultant
My IT career began at Keane, Inc. (now NTT) in Rochester, MN, where I was hired as an IT Consultant ( Programmer/Analyst II). IBM was my client for the entirety of my tenure with Keane, and my primary project involved ensuring that their Manufacturing, Shipping, and Distribution applications were Y2K compliant. Keane and IBM was an excellent place to launch my career, as it exposed me to multiple business verticals (Logistics, distribution, and Manufacturing) and also many different technologies, platforms, programming languages, and tools.
