Support for active ingredient (a.i.) processes at Syngenta plants and tolling sites. Selected for relocation to Greensboro as Mobile, AL plant site was decommissioned. Top projects: Atrazine Process Studies: Led testing effort for alternate design drying technologies as alternative to spray drying atrazine solids. (tested at Niro, Crown Iron Works, Hosskawa Micron) Effectively explored alternate options to existing equipment. Designed and implemented a spray nozzle system for Atrazine stripper overheads system that eliminated frequent exchanger/vapor header clean-outs by utilizing a toluene recycle spray. (Net $400K annual reduction in costs.)Pinoxaden: Successful launch and scale-up support for “Pinoxaden” (Axial herbicide intermediate) at the MPF unit at St. Gabriel LA Site. Included startup support and enhanced distillation design to improve process rates through efficient solvent recycle. Included PI system monitoring for production enhancements.Norflurazon Re-Siting. Successful moving of Norflurazon (herbicide product) from MPF unit to tolling opportunity at WeylChem in Augusta GA, and later to Clariant (Elgin, SC), during several annual campaigns. Achieved target yields after evaluation/adjustments.MPF Dryer: Made recommendations for alternate design rotary dryer for MPF unit, which was tested and adopted by others in PT. Current unit, makes use of new Robatel vertical dryer.

Mobile, Alabama Area

Had supervisory role for Cold Creek Site 2600 Unit Pilot Plant, including day-to-day oversight responsibilities for production and unit construction. Set up a rotating operating crew, consisting of plant operators, department chemists, and contract engineers to support development of new products. Responsible for: Training of operators at the pilot unit, writing of operating procedures, regulatory reporting to state and federal agencies, raw material ordering and scheduling, packaging selection, enforcement of plant safety program. Pilot unit ran a 24 hr. - 7 day schedule.. Designed and oversaw construction of pilot plant equipment, which was expanded and enhanced several times to add new capabilities, including vacuum distillation, bead mills and filtration systems.Addition of a new interlocked addition line to equip unit with phosgene addition from 2300 supply system to enhance production capability. Produced Mesotrione and 2-Cyanophenol (used in Azoxystrobin) at commercial quantities. Also resolved Ames bioactivity issues and crystallization problems during pilot campaign. Gave technical advice on building of $140 Million dollar production unit at Cold Creek, during construction and startup, again when moved to Monthey Site, Switzerland.
