In the past few years I've seen a significant shift in networking strategy away from the traditional tenets of what was considered "acceptable" network design. It used to be that networking was all about providing adequate connectivity; ensuring that the wired side had enough port density and that wireless signal was present in key areas were among the top considerations when designing and deploying a network. Troubleshooting end system issues consisted mainly of making a few checks on network connectivity and testing access from other end systems. The network user of today is much more sophisticated than the user of yesterday. Today's network user has multiple devices and expects on-demand connectivity for their apps regardless of their physical location. Networks today carry a large variety of traffic types from an ever-increasing variety of end devices that didn't exist in years prior. These end systems and applications can place great demand on networks such that any flaw in the network design is quickly (and painfully) exposed. What I'm seeing today are network designs that are smarter, faster, and much more autonomous than their predecessors in understanding and adapting to changing conditions. Networks these days recognize the end system or user that is connecting and provide the exact access and bandwidth required for that user or device to do its job. Networks today self-diagnose and take action when needed. Most of all, though, networks today have the ability to provide an in-depth, contextual understanding of exactly how these end systems use network resources. This ability enables network administrators to quickly solve tactical issues for solving technical problems and provides rich data sets for making long-term strategic decisions. It is this networking world that is driving us forward and one that I am eager to drive. Come join the next generation of networking!
