Associate General Counsel
Current• Evaluate proposed or recommended legal strategies to identify significant underlying legal issues, analyze the legal adequacy of these legal positions, and determine possible consequences of actions on current Agency and Administration policy. • Oversee administrative matters of the Office of General Counsel including approval/disapproval of employee leave, payroll, and travel. Establish deadlines, and ensure they are met. Recommend hiring, disciplinary action, and other personnel actions.• Edit letters, opinions, decisions, regulations, and other documents for signature of the General Counsel or Chair of the National Indian Gaming Commission. • Recommend approval or alternatives to the General Counsel, and, when delegated, exercises final authority when in an Acting capacity.• Review and analyze proposed opinions, rules, regulations, and decisions that may be considered controversial or precedent setting.• Staff the Chair/Commission at conferences/speaking engagements and sit on panels.• Attend and participate in Federal, state, and tribal meetings with various Agency divisions and the Commission.• Liaise with the Department of Justice regarding potential or active litigation in which the positions and actions of the Agency are challenged.
