As part of President Joseph I. Castro's "Bold Ideas Challenge Project," Fresno State dedicated funds to support the Touch the Community Competition, a community service competition engaging student teams that are addressing significant community challenges. By combining the efforts of Adult School teachers & CSUF TESL students, Fresno Adult School ESL students develop English language skills to independently navigate through society. From this, three parties benefit:• University TESL students get experience by working hands-on.• Adult school ESL students receive more level-specific attention.• With the class broken into smaller groups, adult school ESL teachers are able to manage their responsibilities more effectively.Over the past year, we’ve had 14 volunteers getting hands-on experience with each volunteer spending anywhere from 2 to 6 hours per week in the classroom. Our volunteers visit 10 different locations- not only on the official Adult School sites, but also at elementary, middle and schools across Fresno. With class sized that average around 25 students or more, including a recently arrived refugee group, this project has affected more than 250 ESL students!
