About Barbara Pollini
I'm an assistant professor in Biodesign Integration at Aalto University; my background is in Sustainable Design, Material Design and Biodesign. I hold a master in Ecodesign and Eco-innovation, and a master's degree in Computational Design. I've been a senior lecturer at Naba Design University in Milan and Domus Academy for more than ten years, teaching sustainable design and materials, DIY Materials, Biodesign, and Design Fiction for sustainable futures, holding lectures and workshops on the same subjects at various national and international universities. In June 2023, I concluded a PhD in Design at the Polytechnic University of Milan with a doctoral research titled "Healing Materialities from a Biodesign perspective, framing biodesigned materials and artefacts for the sustainability transition". This research combines my main interests in Biodesign, Material Design, and Sustainable Design to explore Biodesign's potential for both conventional and regenerative sustainability. During my doctoral research, I analyzed the emerging professional role of the biodesigner, conducting various biodesign projects in collaboration with Italian and US life sciences experts and scientific laboratories.I constantly switch between hands-on experimentation and theoretical research; my primary research interest focuses on material scenarios based on regenerative processes, including living and life-enabling materials. As an assistant professor in Biodesign Integration, I aim to bridge the gap between design and science in design education, transdisciplinary collaborations across knowledge domains and departments, and to integrate design solutions for sustainable futures.
Listed skills include Sustainable Design, Indesign, Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and 17 others.
