About Patrick Rea

I’ve led 130 investments into 115 companies in the cannabis tech, hemp and CBD sectors since 2015.And I've spent my entire career analyzing and evangelizing business and investment opportunities in consumer driven markets. Twenty years of relationship building at the CEO level has provided me with a keen understanding of the winning (and losing) commercialization strategies for entrepreneurial companies. I'm a doer and a helper. I've traveled the world advocating the business of change. The people I've met inspire me. As a result, if I don't have the answer, I almost always know someone who will. Working with the world's largest investment groups, CPGs, pharmaceutical, nutrition and cannabis companies has taught me a thing or two - most importantly that business can be the greatest agent of social change. I wake up every morning inspired to change the world in the ways I can. Winners of the Marijuana Business Conference Inaugural Pitch Slam, GreenBroz is poised for great success in the cannabis industry as grow operations increase in size and look for solutions to process their product more efficiently and effectively. I worked with the founders of GreenBroz to help refine strategy, tactics, and to introduce them to partner, collaborators, and investors. May 2007 - Dec 2015

Executive Editor, Arcview Market Research

San Francisco, Ca, Us

In this role, I led editorial direction and strategy for the definitive market research report on the legal U.S. cannabis industry, the 3rd Edition of The State of the Legal Marijuana Markets report. It was a heavy lift, but a great, great primer for my understanding of the cannabis industry. http://www.arcviewmarketresearch.com/

Nov 2014 - Nov 2015

Founder & Managing Director

Health Business Partners, Llc

Health Business Partners was my consulting vehicle in-between New Hope/Penton and Canopy. HBP successfully worked with a network of experts and assisted executives intent on commercializing their business ideas and accelerating their understanding of the nutrition industry’s product categories, business models, sales channels and technological opportunities. The growth of the HBP practice was shockingly fast, and revenues/profits came quickly. In the end, consulting is a great lifestyle business, but building something with real enterprise value was the next task. When the CanopyBoulder idea came along, it was too good to pass up, so with the full support of my clients and colleagues, I wound down HBP.

Nov 2013 - Jan 2015

Market Leader - Engredea, Nbj, Club Industry

New York, Ny, Us

In my role, I was responsible for a portfolio that included the following brands: Engredea, Nutracon, Functional Ingredients, Nutrition Business Journal, The NBJ Summit, Club Industry. Not sure what a "Market Leader" was in the grand hierarchy or corporate job titles, but I managed 14 or so P&Ls. On a daily basis, I was the senior leader of the group, drove partnership development, designed business integrations, instituted financial rigor & reporting, management to aggressive business and financial goals. My group included controlled circulation print magazines, a subscription-based business journal, online eCommerce stores, trade shows, conferences, executive retreats and summits, digital magazines, market research reports, ad-supported websites, mobile apps and online digital subscription products. It was a tough time to be in B2B media, but it was a great experience to gain early in the journey.

Jan 2012 - Aug 2013

Publisher & Editorial Director

New York, Ny, Us

When New Hope decided to move NBJ to Boulder, I took on the role of business manager, publisher and editorial lead. Navigating 100% turnover resulting from the move, I built a completely new team, kept the journal on schedule, and managed to grow sales and profits in the transition year and in subsequent years. NBJ was the premier business journal for CEOs, investors, consultants and thought leaders in the U.S. and global supplement, organic, natural, alternative medicine, CAM and nutritional ingredient supply industries. In addition, it became an intelligence hub for the nutrition industry's leadership, and we were often hired to assist top CEOs and investment firms in strategy, niche market analysis, and opportunity assessment. I was probably a pawn in a larger corporate succession plan here, but I learned a lot about how results matter over process every day of the year. The demands were high...maybe unreasonable, but they were what they were. It was hard, not always fun, and I definitely did all the wrong things twice, but somehow we pulled it off.

May 2007 - Aug 2013

Co-Chairman

The Nbj Summit

While Publisher & Editorial Director of NBJ, I was asked to become Manager & Co-Chair of the NBJ Summit (the first of the other 13 P&Ls that I was eventually tasked to run). The NBJ Summit was a great event run by a really fun team. Over the years, it became the premier leadership retreat for executives in and interested in the nutrition industry. In my role, I oversaw all aspects of this industry leading retreat including strategy, budgeting, general management, personal marketing outreach, relationship building and quality control. In my time managing the NBJ Summit, we experienced 100% attendee growth (200 to 400 attendees) and even higher revenue and profit growth.Running the NBJ Summit was a great experience, and we grew it despite limited resources thanks to a great operations and marketing team who were very focused on meeting the needs of our attendees.

Jul 2008 - Aug 2013

Director Of Emedia

Boulder, Co, Us

In 2005, I was moved to Boulder, CO to lead all things digital & new media for New Hope Natural Media, a division of Penton Media. As an "intrapreneur" within New Hope, my role was to rapidly understand and grow New Hope's online business, leveraging all the assets of the 120 person Boulder office and Penton's corporate machine...which we did with an audacious team of two. Sales increased nearly 200% in the first year and things were going well...but then I was reassigned to manage Nutrition Business Journal, it's move to Boulder from San Diego, and the resulting 100% staff turnover. Thank you? A true reboot. As the Director of eMedia, I was completely unqualified, under-resourced and unlikely to succeed, but somehow we pulled it off and started a group that became a significant contributor to the health of the company's valuation.

Jul 2005 - May 2007

Director Of Research

Nutrition Business Journal

NBJ was the leading business newsletter for executives in the nutrition industry. With a core team of 4, we provided proprietary market quantifications and projections for decision makers in need of data to support their strategy and business plans. I was a spreadsheet monkey there, modeling the nutrition industry in all channels and product segments. Research was my jam, and I jumped in headfirst. Along the way, we sold the company and I stayed on to help hit the 4-year earn out in 1 year, by launching market research reports which grew the business significantly. The founders were kind enough to give me a check in thanks and I bought a condo near Windansea Beach in La Jolla so I could surf every morning before work (and sometimes after). Thanks guys!NBJ completed a successful exit to Penton Media in 2001.

Jan 2000 - Jun 2005

Financial Analyst

Us

Health Business Partners was a boutique venture capital, investment banking and strategic consulting firm. I was definitely their first hire, probably the worst financial analyst ever, and absolutely learned a ton supporting the 4 newly minted MBA/managing directors in business development, financial analysis, strategic consulting & venture capital investments. I felt completely under water there almost all the time. It was great.
