About Rebecca Barrett

I have been bundled into a small, windowless office under the shop floor of my first 'proper' job. My manager informs me that I have to do the compulsory 'eLearning' training before I can start my first shift. She assures me that it's easy and to just get through it as soon as I can so that I can start work. She parks me in front of one of those old-fashioned chunky desktop machines, you know, the ones the 'hackers' in cheesy 90s movies used to break into the mainframe.Everything is dusty and the content in front of me is grey and dull. I have three modules to complete: - One telling me to bend at my knees so as not to hurt myself when lifting boxes of jeans.- One stating the obvious that it is not acceptable to discriminate against customers or staff.- And one inefficiently trying to teach me how to use the tills upstairs. Spoiler alert: The content was outdated so my boss had to retrain me anyway.I don't really pay attention, a twenty-minute module takes me an hour as the machine is so slow, I watch the clock and play on my phone between load screens. When I guess the answers wrong at the end of the module, I memorise the correct one, reload the page, and go again.Click. Click. Click.I am so bored: I learn nothing. Although I didn't realise it at the time, this memory would form the basis of everything I would strive not to create/develop in my eLearning career. Therefore I pledge, to all eLearning users everywhere, to create content that is:1. Engaging - using UI/UX principles to create attractive, intuitive, and interactive learning solutions to enable long-term knowledge retention. 2. Accessible, inclusive, and diverse - whether it be using inclusive language, a diverse cast of voice actors and animated characters, or abiding by WCAG standards, my eLearning content will be curated to welcome all appropriate individuals.3. Relevant - no more template, grey eLearning modules created to tick boxes. All content must have a relevant, achievable, and actionable value.Curious about my availability, whether I can help you on a project or just fancy a bit of free eLearning advice?Drop me an email at: rebeccamariebarrett@gmail.comCheck out my portfolio at: www.rebecca-barrett.com Or feel free to message me here on LinkedIn, I'm always happy to expand my network, and I look forward to hearing from you.Main Softwares and Skills: Articulate Storyline, Rise, ADDIE, Google suite, Adobe Suite, Professional eLearning Voice-over, Scriptwriting, VYOND, Action Mapping (Needs Analysis).
