Tribology is a material science that deals with friction and wear of materials, and focuses on the properties of lubricants, coatings, and materials. In the tribology group at ANL, the main project focus on surface protection and friction and wear reduction; with the goal of minimizing energy losses. I am currently working with nanoparticles for lubrication enhancement and studying their tribo-chemical film (chemical reaction between the lubricant additives and the material’s surface). Ultimately, the goal of this research is to formulate environmentally friendly energy efficient oils that will reduce wear in engines and gears. I am required to work with the high frequency reciprocating rig (HFRR or ball-on-flat) test machine, an optical microscope, and a profilometer. The friction data obtained from the HFRR is processed in KaleidaGraph. The data I obtain is organized in an Excel spread sheet and also into PowerPoint presentations. Also, I must collaborate with my supervisor and other scientist to ensure the research stays on track.
