About Rebecca Reader
As a Writing Consultant at Massey University, I help students at all levels (Bachelors, Masters, PhD) ensure their writing style is clear, fluid, and persuasive. My ostensible aim is to help them achieve stronger grades, but it’s much more than that. When students engage with the craft of writing, they also engage with their own potential as confident and accurate communicators, learning to wield words in precise, effective ways. There are few workplaces or situations in life where this skill isn’t an enormous advantage. I comment on assignments from a range of disciplines. I may start the day with Psychology, then wander into Classics or English literature, Horticulture or Animal Sciences, Creative Writing or Business. It’s a job that keeps me on my toes and acquainted with trends in certain fields. It also allows me to witness in real time the various flexings and evolutions of the brilliantly eccentric language called English. When I became a Writing Consultant a few years ago, I had already read a small library of books on the craft of writing. I didn’t feel I had nothing to learn, but I could never have guessed how much I would learn from critiquing student work. In my role, I can’t just say that a sentence or paragraph doesn’t work. I have to explain why, and this means I have to probe language for faulty connections or blockages much as a car mechanic would explore an engine that has stopped running smoothly. My rummaging around on the page with oily rags has rewarded me with far greater insight into the power of words. At the end of the day, I often close the assignment I’ve been critiquing, and open up a story I’m writing. This is when my learning is put into practice, when I discover that students from the length and breadth of Aotearoa New Zealand are helping me to be a better writer. It’s not just that they’ve taught me the dos and don’ts, it’s that they’ve given me a sense of why writing matters. Five thousand years since the first writing system evolved, writing is still one of the main ways in which the world is brightened and improved, and that’s exactly why it’s worth teaching, fussing over, and getting right.
